Ever tried just using a basic wire-gate revolver in that same configuration? I used to use that setup as a slack tender for the lockjack when I used to climb on one. I just left the revolver clipped to my leg loop and when I foresaw doing an extended descent over a branch I'd clip the tail of my line into the revolver and voila. Not as smooth as a fixe mind you but less steps to initiate and no risk of dropping anything.
