unicender - is it worth it?

Are you using the control mode in the doubled rope technique? If so, it does not work well due to too much friction.

If you are using doubled rope, just try the squeeze method with one hand while you tail the rope with the other. This will work well with a natural crotch or ring-to-ring friction saver.

The control mode works very well on single rope descents.

maybe your fu-man-chu got stuck in it!

Weird. In the control mode you wrap the tail under the L bar and over the top and then pull on the tail until all the cams collapse into a small bundle. At that point you should be feeling weight on the rope that you are tailing. Just pulling at straws here, but if you don't collapse all the cams by giving it a good tug, you are not going to go anywhere.

Could this be the problem?

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Rock Exotica will rebuild its version of the Unicender.

You send your Uni directly to Rock Exotica and they will rebuild it and ship it directly back to you. Cost is $125.
Is this still current? I've got 2 unis needed rebuilding. They work on doubled rope but I can't climb on single strand, new rope without slip. Thanks :)

This quote is from the unicender user instructions on the rock exotica web site.

"The UNICENDER will eventually wear out and will slip rather than hold a load, so you must be aware of this and inspect it with this in mind. When it is worn out we can rebuild it for you – contact us for current costs. "

Thanks. They've quoted me $154.50 per unit plus international shipping, and they say it's a once-only rebuild.

At first I was going through their Australian agent, and they were adding on about $100 each, so direct is definitely the way to go.
