unicender - is it worth it?

this has been an excellent discussion - I spent my dough on some new line instead. I'll wait for this device to evolve.

So Tom, seeing that you've got the connection, why dont you put a phone call out there and find out if and when these new unis will be available.

You can't walk around TCIA expo wearing a Uni as a necklace and not be able to find out when the new model becomes available

Looks like the roller modification is well under way!

Take the roller out and add the gate. That would be awesome.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Rock Exotica will rebuild its version of the Unicender.

You send your Uni directly to Rock Exotica and they will rebuild it and ship it directly back to you. Cost is $125.

Lucky call...Morgan was available when I called.

As we were talking he opened this thread and did a quick look.

His treework season is slowing down so he'll have more time to do metalwork. We talked about some of the ideas that have been shared here. If there are any other thoughts and suggestions...use this thread as a bulletin board.

While we talked Morgan shared an idea for a different Uni. I'm going to start a new thread about it.

The new design looks cool but I'd rather see the slot toward the front, otherwise the rope is always aligned with the notched part, making it much more susceptible of falling out

Theres got to be a way for the gate or slot to close and lock the rope in place.Otherwise I believe it is non locking and in the right situation could become hazadous.

"technically" speaking, the uni takes 4 separate motions to be considered "open"

If the new "gate" was positioned toward the front, the weight of the rope itself would keep it secure, but, leave it susceptible to falling put of the notch when you try to tend the line during a limb walk.

A swing gate of sorts would solve all of these problems fo' sho'

I agree. if the slot to allow the rope into the roller was angled exactly opposite the slots in the clutch bars it would be much more likely for the rope to stay in the roller slot.

Seeing as Rock Exotica are manufacturing these now, i reckon the little button lock mechanism in the Omni Pully they make could be utilized to make a locking gate on the bottom "L" Incorporate a roller and even better.

Jimmys on the right track i think!

I am sure the evolution of the Uni will address people's concerns on the wear.

In the meantime, I have been using a configuration that minimizes wear by a vast amount: fixed pulley with a large aluminum ring set below the tethered Uni.

I will enter a tree with a rope walker system, with the Uni as the upper ascender, advance to the TIP to determine that all is well. I will then add the fix and ring as shown for the working of the tree. This adds enough friction to completely release the Uni for fast downward descents. No rope twisting or hockling. It also allows for slack tending on returns from limb walking.

The nice thing about this is the Uni is not dependent upon this to function. It is just a means of getting more rope miles out of the Uni.

I think I have mentioned before that I tried this setup with a figure 8 and it wore grooves very quickly and was experiencing hockling. The ring constantly moves, putting wear on different portions, thus extending its usable life...and they are cheap...and you can tend slack, which you cannot on the figure 8.

with the uni, do you descend with one hand? or do you use two hands. In that picture how are you controlling your descent?

Uni is a two hand descent for sure while climbing SRT but with the additional fricton added by the additional added ring it is possible to descend one hand.

Bing. Why and how has no one sent a unicender out to you? If only we knew of a unicender distributor that could send out a uni for you to use temporarily.

For the meantime, if he doesn't send one out I'm about to buy a second unicender. When it comes in I'll ship out my unicender to you to fly for a bit

Also. Yesterday during the NJISA work day, I had Taitree use a uni for a whooping 8 ft ascent until he was then asked to come down to look at some additional work (life of a crew leader).

I'm pretty sure it was the shortest ascent and descent needed to convert someone over.

The Fixe looks excellent. Couldn't it all fit on the one biner? It looks like an elegant solution and I look forward to trying it now. Nice one.
