More on wide spread herbicide damage

Yeah ...I assume it's a combination of susceptibility and maybe even what stage of growth the leaves were in.

More on wide spread herbicide damage

Trees I saw this week....River birch with every single leaf curled: (Their back yard is against a farm field...this was their front yard...odd, because not everything else was curled. A redbud was a little, less on a burning bush and magnolia) Oak at the back of my shop property (immediately...

More on wide spread herbicide damage

Working with a friend at a University. We are collecting rain water weekly from 7 different sites in town and will treat for Dicamba. The test we've found is such that it makes sense to run all of the samples at once so currently in the freezer for a few more weeks.

    EAB fungal infections

I like that it talks of 3 locally naturally occuring fungi and researching ways to entice EAB to be exposed to those. Unfortunately it sounds like the other isost effective right now. But, yeah nothing happens in a vacuum. The ecological web is complex!

Yeah...for this entire multi-state region, this is a "next generation" kind of hope. But it is hope!

    EAB fungal infections

University of Minnesota has found ways to cause insect killing fungal infections among Emerald Ash Borer. One of only a few possibly promising "wide scale" helps for Ash trees I've seen in 20+ years. Hope it works!!! https://mspmag.com/arts-and-culture/has-the-emerald-ash-borer-met-its-match/

    What's killing arborvitae?

Tissue sample. Some from the original picture were on a mound...a mound built from the spoils digging up a pond, but not a low spot. Everything here is a wet spot...it's very flat and all clay. But most of these haven't been in wettest.

    What's killing arborvitae?

That looks more like a tip blight or wind (salt?) burn.

    What's killing arborvitae?

Positive. Granted, that's just one. But at least I feel like we might be on the trail. Will start testing others as the calls come in.

Bark receding about 1' up around entire base of silver maple

I would expect some kind of teeth marks. Not out of the question....though. From a distance I might have thought a beaver, but again, there would be marks.

Using canola oil for bar lube - oiling issues now. Never in the past

I have not had problems with failed oil systems (running canola for at least 10 years now... And it sounds like I may use my saws less than you do). If they sit for a while, things certainly need help getting going. I wonder if the canola got gummed up while they sat all winter??

    Owl dead in tree

I used to work at ODNR. A coworker had an owl feather she found hanging on her car mirror. As she got out of her car in the parking lot one day, one of the wildlife officers approached her about it. Ask where she got it, she explained she found it on the ground. He said that is fine... She is...

Bark receding about 1' up around entire base of silver maple

That happened at least some time ago. There is just a tiny bit of intact cambium in the 3rd pic that is keeping the tree alive. It's trying to regrow (see circled area), but that tree should come down sooner than later. I suspect it will start dying quickly and shedding large branches. If...

    Owl dead in tree

There is a story about somebody who got lost while hiking and confessed when he was found that he ate an eagle to survive. The ranger stressed that is not OK, but given the circumstances he wouldn't file charges....but asked "just out of curiosity, I gotta know: was it any good?" "It was OK...

    Tip over in Cleveland area

I can see charging for dog poop...who wants to deal with that? I have that language in our contract (not a specified charge, just that it is their responsibility to have it cleaned up - I've never done anything about it contractually). If its just a pile I'll usually put a cone over it...
