    I initially read it as 1". That much missing is a death sentence nearly every time, although I have see some eucs survive a flock of sheep that had done that level of damage. I wouldn't trust that silver maple to last very long though.

    I love that idea with the biner on a sling, choked to the branch to keep the rope from running into the crotch!! That's so simple, I can't not use the shit outta that.

    I agree 100%, I was just presenting a most extreme example. I would probably run a stretchier rope like an arbormaster or true blue, but otherwise just as you described.

    HMPE is very abrasion resistant. It's definitely not fond of shock loading, but if your peak force is less than 20% of MBS, the you should be fine. With a mini porty, I don't imagine they'd be running anything over 1/2" line, and even if you are using 1/2" Stable Braid, with it's 10,500# MBS...

    Alternatively, if one doesn't clear the growth, could the honeysuckle and bittersweet get thick enough to choke out the flow of the brook? Especially since water isn't always flowing hard there...
