Using personal gear at work

I instituted this inventory system two years ago, so far I have not had any significant missing gear. The only missing gear I can think of was a couple of screwdrivers and a pitchfork. I replaced them at my expense. I don't think responsible employees have a problem keeping up with gear. If any significant gear did go missing, I would assume the main problem is that I've hired the wrong people.

I'm sure there are many other effective ways to account for serviceable gear and our preferred system may not be for everyone, but it works for us.

I have my own gear, but use very little of it at work. It is all provided.
You want me to do a job? You want me to produce income for the company?

You will provide me with the tools to do so

Re: cheapskates!

Hmmm...

Are you also an obnoxious idiot in real life?

Young and dumb? Want to call me that too?

I just skimmed this whole thread in about 5 minutes. Easy to see what's what, who's who, and who is so nearly perfect that the rest can hardly stand it. (Of course we all knew that a couple months after you joined up here.)

Oh, and my speed at work is similar....thanks to 35 years of learned skills, now adapted to all the new tools and toys.
Doubt you'd have a chance.

How old are you anyhow, you sound like you're just practicing shaving.

LMAO, yes your prob right. You'd prob out climb me so fast, I'd look as though I just got my first climbing kit. You'd most likly know how to use every and any new tool out there and I'd look like a complete bafoon. Or you could be this new gear buyer junky with the same 5 years of skill just repeated for 30 years.?

It's in my profile if you need to know that bad. Yes and my razor doesn't even have blades in it my wife won't allow that just yet. She still waiting for my kevlar neck protection to come in the mail. That when I get to try out an electric razor. After 3 months of no cuts I might be able to try a bic.

Re: cheapskates!

I am going to go totally off topic so forgive me!
ED? is this your real personality or just your on line persona? If this is really you ......WOW!!
I do not even get why people would be all bravado-ed up all the time."im better",Im Faster","I can lift heavier wood".Ya know some people dont try to RANK themselves. They just do there job each day!everyone does not think like you do!!!THANK GOD!!
The ego act is just men behaving badly ,and it is really nauseating!! a while back you even said to Gerry something like he thinks hes the best.I actually doubt that he sits at home wasting his freakin time like YOU do trying to figure out where he "fits in" ,Hes not that insecure!!
Back to the subject! I will supply all saws, rigging ropes,BLocks, porties,Hobbs, poles, silky's,etc. That being said,I still have My own personal "gear" that way I know what kind of condition the stuff I have to use is.Most climbers by their own saddle and trinkets etc!!

I not sure what your getting at, everyone here is better than me. I just have a loud mouth.

Re: cheapskates!

ED,For real.....you make whatever comments you like.
And i think I know sarcasm when I hear it?
i guess its old to me now is all. once in a while I get a chuckle out of your stuff ......most of the time it makes me roll my eyes.
If thats really you,and you are being true to yourself then thats great!!

Re: cheapskates!

Most climbers buy their own saddles and trinkets. Sorry for the obvious misquote. My apologies. Didnt realize what it would inspire. Good luck with that. Considering you have never met me thats quite the insight.

Re: cheapskates!

I've acquired my own gear so I can have a choice in what I use. PPE is to be provided by the company AND to answer Tom's question, it is the company's liability. That means companies need to have regular inspection of any and all PPE because they can't dodge the OSHA requirements. Some regulate the gear and only allow equipment that which meets their criteria.

This stuff is not taxable benefits so should be provided in such a manner as to not effect the employee's taxable income negatively. The company will have a deductible expense.

Too many small businesses cry poor and expect their employees to take risks that are unreasonable. I prefer to work safely.

How true on both accounts.

Re: cheapskates!

My experience has been that having one's own tools and gear demonstrates to your employer (and coworkers) that you are for real, and are willing to invest in being an arborist. It separates you from all the day laborers and others available that are doing the job for the cash, and aren't ambitious about tree work. It has always been assumed that I would bring my own tools, and I usually ask about the type of job so I can bring the right stuff, hopefully. I haven't yet heard about someone out here supplying gear, although I have heard of it back east. But, our hourly pay rate tends to be much higher too, especially for entry level positions. (Massive generalization there!)

I love the idea of a gear allowance for employees. That would encourage them to take care of their gear, or motivate them to research gear and get some. For those who are self-employed, and contracting out, its all deductible, so there is really no excuse for not outfitting yourself properly. I would think it would be a point of pride that you have your own equipment.

As a postscript I do not loan out my equipment to rookies that are just hired on for the day, or for the season, only to other seasoned tree people that I know and trust. (Which rarely has to happen since they usually have more stuff than I do). And if I don't approve of the way a coworker handles tools I don't lend him anything of mine either, although I have managed to keep this on the dl so as not to ruffle feathers.
