Trees from a distance

butternut not too common in NC; was more in WI, but i do not remember them drooping like that; semipendulous. and do the leaves differ? dirr says bark ridges can be whitish; check.

but that white patch bark disease sure looks like oak. Q nigra has differing leaf shapes and it can droop but leaves are simple...

Not only way bigger, but totally inconsistent with typical form. 'Round here they are usually tall, slender trees, with the first main leads starting over 20 feet. I've never seen a stout, spreading one like yours. Gotta love treebuzz!

That's one weird black walnut. Wow.

It looks a whole lot like Populus. P x canadensis or deltoides especially.
I was also thinking Pterocarya fraxinifolia for a bit before you said it was a native...

Awesome TFAD Frax!

Around here they grow with compound leaves and don't look exactly identical to populus deltoides.

sorry girlfriend, but I have to write one of my typical, "you are wrong about your own picture", statements.

don't hate me for it.

You better go visit that exact site again, I think something is mixed up there in your photos and in your recollection.

Could this not be the tree I took the leaf from? Well, I guess that's possible. If so its been mislabeled forever. It does look like poplar (which I did previously admit on Jeff's initial guess too). I'll have to dig up the original slide and see if I can see leaf detail.

The fact that all you guys who live in black walnut country do not think it looks anything like black walnut really makes me doubt. It's not like I really know what these trees could look like when they are big. I should take my own advice and stay off IDing eastern trees - including my own images it seems.

And no David, of course I don't hate you for pointing out a likely mistake! Why would I? If I hated everyone who pointed out one of my mistakes, I would be a lonely girl. I feel like a stupid girl right now. I've felt like one before. I'm sure I'll feel like one again. I'm sure Ill get over it too.

Time to do some work anyway...

So who's up? It's fair to say Jeff. Or open board.

Well, get over it.

BTW, your all black outfit in your new avatar is hot.

I just downloaded and zoomed in on the photo. A little blurry up close but it does look like cottonwood, populus deltoides. Leaves look triangular or heart shaped. Good call.

Do the moderators need to change the name of this site to treeharmony.com?

ha ha ha, Frax might be the female mirror of the X-man. She does have an X in her name.

Way to step it up. That's what I tend to do too.
