Trees from a distance

The 'Hat has many amazing trees including some prodigious American elms but this is not one of them.

Hint. If you are sticking to trees that seem like they belong in SE Alberta you will miss this. I have a leaf pressed from this tree and its almost impossible to tell the leaf form from the image. Another hint.
 
Nuh, nope and no. None of those.

I'm wondering if this tree is atypical looking for the species. I have seen few and this is by far the biggest I've seen. It has a native range east of the Mississippi and over much of the midwest through northeast. I'm thinking its probably relatively common in its range but its not my territory so maybe I'm presuming too much.
 
Not that either. I thought this would be easy for you eastern guys.
