I thought I had it with Prunus spinosa.

Nope.

Well, it's not THAT uncommon, just not super available from most nurseries. When they are, they're usually in small containers.

If you were following the thread, the clues sort of led to what it might be...

1.) Prunus

2.) Not cerasifera or spinosa

3.) Not commonly available at nurseries, except in small containers (BIG HINT).

...Not many Prunuses (Pruni?) are in this category. So I thought that would do it.

Funny - stood in the top of a large one this winter pruning and yes it did look like your images. Not a usual tree for here either. Whether right or not I should have made this guess before.

Well, Jeff broke it open with getting to Prunus, and then evilly letting Rob whittle the candidates down for me.....

I was imagining a Home Depot or Walmart parking lot with the little fruit tree whips for sale. Had I really tried I might have come up with that, although I'd say "crappy little prunus species" was a pretty solid guess anyways.
