Paulownia tomentosa?

[/ QUOTE ]

X2. Beat me to it!

Close! P tomentosa is a timber tree in SE NC and is also a roadside kind of tree here, as is a kin to this one. doubt that the timber from this one is worth much then again i have never cut a mature one.

Paulownia has bigger more purple flowers and keeps seed pods on a long time and grows to a bigger height.

yer warm...

Jac dies in zone 8--here is 7.
also jac has smoother bark than even paulownia

Several times the size of any C chinensis ime

i've seen trees with this scientific name at farmsteads and downtown streets; it's been growing in the SE USA for centuries.

So, Guy, is 'their kin' the southern Catalpa ( C. bignonioides)?

-Diane

no, catalpa is a stockier tree with a white flower

not sure this one is grown where the redwoods are

zone 7 northern limit for the species. this individual tree used to have another species name but the taxonomists in their wisdom eliminated it.

dirr hates the species; says it is worse than ailanthus; "pestiferous". I'm raising them.
wink.gif
natl champ of species is 47' x 44'--this one looks very close to that, tho i have reduced its spread over the years.

Yeah, not much grows around redwood trees... they make sure of that!

I'll leave this one for Tom to figure out.

and what about X or Robinia?

Guy,

Melia azedarach

Chinaberry or Pride of India or variety close to that.

In the mohogany family.

Very smooth bark, Chinaberry has purplish to white flowers. Zone 7 and the correct mature size Guy talked about.

Someone else go again if I got it right. I should not be getting on the buzz this week; makes me stay up late...
