more fun with knucklebooms

The winch is definitely a powerful option. One of the first spider crane jobs I did was in a 10’ wide area behind a house. We did the tree with next to zero slewing, and really only extended to begin and retract to finish.

These spidey winch wire ropes should really be understood to stay in 50% of the given capacity at any radius. The wire strength in single whip can be much lower than the boom in some scenarios.

Still a game winning option and dope to have even if only used 3 times a year.

Hey Whip! Is there much benefit to running it in single whip vs double whip configuration? Or could you give your breakdown on that ?

Single whip is very easy to reeve and attach to the pill. Multiple whips (or parts) can take more time to reeve and is usually only required for final trunk wood. The hoisting speed also drops down considerably.

In the case of my crane, the pill is 2 plates with a removable center pin. In single whip, the swaged eye terminates on the pin. To set up multiple parts, the pin comes out, the plates slide apart to allow the required number of sheaves to be stacked in, then the plates are pinned back together. The beauty is the same pill works for all tackle from single to quadruple.

Not all crane pills are the same, and some have a dedicated single whip weight/hook and whatever other number of multiple part pulley/hook setups as required. The bigger the crane, the heavier the blocks will be, and the more you have to pay close attention to the wraps on the drum while the rope is slacked for reeving.

In the end, the juice is rarely worth the squeeze for one fat trunk. Just take it in two as you are well aware and have described with your 33002.
