As much as I hate to admit it, I kind of agree with Tony on this one. First we must understand the basic fundamentals, concepts, and mechanics of proper falling and follow them. We can then use these "tricks" to aid, enhance and make our cutting more effective. No matter how awesome the "trick", it won't be of much use if you have a bypassed, lopsided, Murphy super sizzlerized undercut thats gunned right at the garage. It also won't help much if you destroy all your hinge, or overshoot your back-cut so bad that you miss your under cut altogether. Trick or not, that fucker is going on the garage!!

I am suggesting an intelligent sawyer, with a firm grounding in the fundamentals can, will and should gauge each and every tree independently and adjust as is safe, efficient and necessary.

Yeah, we are both right. You gotta learn to walk before you can compete in the 1000 yard dash. Once the fundamentals are practiced to the point where they become second nature, is the time to advance the skill set.

Perhaps you’d like to share your reasoning for shaving so much wood off a tree you knew was hollow compromising the little sound wood left? Did it occur to you to inspect the tree before putting a saw to it? Something doesn’t add up with the short bar narrative, your actions contradict the reality of the situation.

Were you aware that you were cutting the little hinge wood you had?
Why did you not pre load the pull line in a test pull, to see if adjustments were needed?

1. I"m no expert but it appears that his under-cut has some serious bypass. A big problem in this scenario.

2. He tells us that there is about 10% of the tree remaining on the outer edge, then for some strange reason decides it would be a good idea to "shave" the bark. In doing so he also shaved off 5-7% of the remaining 10% of his viable hinge. Anyone with even minimal experience falling stovepipes would never think of doing something so fucking stupid. All this was done because his saw was too small? Speechless!

3. Take a close look at the vid. Watch the tagline on the backside of the tree as they begin to pull. Does that look like a well set and dressed tagline to you? Creeped up the tree 6 ft for fuck sakes!
Is it too much to ask that he learn to tie and set a proper running bowline before his next vid?

The reality is that this semi-instructional video was full of shoddy rigging and some extremely subpar cutting performed by an under schooled, under skilled person who didn't look very comfortable (scared) while at the stump. More make it up as you go bullshit being posted by so- called professionals that will get people hurt.
