Documenting my hand-sewn eye process

Super nice stitching !! I'm just getting into it with simple stuff like a saw lanyard and hitchcords.
That job looks really good , can't wait to see the test results..
Long Buzz thread but yes there are test results buried in here somewhere, so far no pull-test has failed any of my "2nd generation" sewn eyes, cordage always fails first well away from the eye. By second-generation I mean eyes that are "pre-compressed" before sewing. The first eyes I sewed in 10mm hitch cord with 50lb test waxed polyester thread failed in the 4200-4500 lb range (some variation across multiple tests). Could be a "false variable" as my overall sewing technique has improved quite a bit, balancing the tension on each stitch better, burying the lock stitch more consistently, etc. I think pre-compression is likely a contributing factor to greater strength.

Well that's impressive, the fact that you are putting the work to test. I've a few light sewing projects and none of them have been for life support, but the moment I get around to it I'll want to pick your brain.
Thanks for the posts...

I've sewed my saw lanyards. Initially, I was sewing them with what I considered to be a normal number of stitches, but changed to using only a few stitches in the harness attachment end so it will fail before injuring me.

Well guys, I read all 43 pages like it was my new favorite book. I don't have much to add at present, but was interested in some opinions on some stitches I have done.
Each side after 3 passes with 100# poly/nylon blend. 55 stitches total.

It's not the cleanest work I have seen, but I feel like it would work. If I intended to do anything really heavy, I would make a 4th pass.

So, what's y'alls thoughts on break strength of the stitch being calculated for the task, even if that means that you know your stitch will fail prior to the rope? For example in this picture, I have 145 complete passes- that I am counting for this anyway- at 50# per, for a calculated strength of 7250, but this Sterling WorkPro, in 12.7mm, has an MBS over 10k. I intend to use it as an adjustable friction saver for big removals, so it's not supposed to see much action anyway.....

To add: I know this is not my best stitching, but I put a lot more stitches than I felt were mandatory for some peace of mind about that.

Old bump.... Do you know the make/name of the orange black cordage?

Orange version of this:

Thank you both, that looks like it. Want to try and sew a few thimble loops with it. Will post pics after materials arrive and I get it done.

Just make sure you use triple fishermans knots because dyneema is slippery stuff that can roll outa double

In before Tom !

Yeah, no knots planned for this. Want to make the two loops on the left (less the knots). Actually found a place to order some Ocean Vectran 6mm.... no idea if it is real so will just have to wait to see if it shows up. It was double the price of the 5mm NE cord so not sure if it was worth it.

Where did you find it?

I’ve only ordered from them twice, but both times I was very pleased with MapleLeafRopes. Cool seeing them have a presence on this forum too, can ask questions and get answers easy peasy.

Just out of curiosity, @Ragnar are you sure that the high priced cordage wasn’t showing you the cost in Canadian dollars? Your statement for whatever card you used to buy the stuff might show a lower amount charged in US dollars.

There also is a little flag in the top right corner which should show the currency. As always if the price doesn't meet or beat the competition we would be happy to take a look and see what we can do. We have a TON of SKUs and sometimes there are errors. The price however does look correct - 15% below MSRP which is normally right in line with the rest of the world unless someone is getting desperate!

I also do my best to keep an eye here but sometimes do miss stuff so feel free to shoot us a message on Instagram or give us a call for the fastest possible answers! Though I do love posting here so everyone can see.
