Oh yea, I did this too. Samson hawkeye, 11 inch overlapping burys plus 6 inches on each side of the overlap area. I tried 2 inches on each side but I couldn't milk the burys back in the whole way. It was very tight (and thick) and I doubt it would have ever come apart, but I wasn't comfortable...
Hrc naked eyes, ice tail brumel and long overlapping burys to add girth and hold round better, and my new captain hook setup with 50 ft. of ocean in a bag I made. Knots tied to show flexibility of different splices.
Btw, What do we use to coat naked eyes and how important is it to do so?
I found the splice to be pretty easy too. Perhaps I should say it was long and hard for a hitch cord. I've never had a 10mm hand spliced double braid hitch cord, so maybe it came out totally normal, it just suprised me people can use that, or I thought there is another way. I used the nick wi...
I am almost into oak trim season so I have been thinking about ways to speed and simplify production. One idea I have seen recently is to use a base tie, but with the tie being at the mid point of the tree. This way you can do one side of the tree, then switch side of the rope at mid height and...
One of these days we need to get as many ropes as possible in one place with a super static and high anchor point, maybe a big crane, and do our own testing. Tcia expo seems like a good place. I guess all ropes would have to be new. It would also be nice to test new vs broken in. I imagine a...
I just did a couple hitch cords that turned out super supple. They were ice tail and hrc. So, not typical double braids of course. I did both with a brumel, the ice tail with very long overlapping burys to make it thicker and hoping it would hold round better, and the hrc with naked eyes and...
The specs listed for 12.5 work pro say it's more elastic than 12.5 htp, but that doesn't always pan out in real world use. Blue moon is supposed to be more static than than 13mm km3, but I get no stretch from either at my max heights.
I think the thinner bar and chain does make a difference in cutting speed. I don't pinch my climbing saw, most of the time, so it's not an issue for me. What I don't like about the .043 chains is I can't find one that has normal rakers. They all have the "low kickback" rakers which just kills...
It's the only poly/poly 1/2 in static that I know of, so it probably has the least stretch and bounce. I thought remembered you saying you had some. Is there something you don't like about it?
With the 13mm km3, the wrench is good durring assent or steep decent, tending is fine, it's walking out a limb or almost any horizontal traverse that sucks because the wrench gives too much friction and it's hard to pull it down the rope. Or it doesn't decend well unless its almost totally...
I have also noticed that shorter legs make for better more reliable grab, but too short and tight makes for poor tending. I think others have said that.
I've been switching back and forth from yale 11.7 and 13mm km3. It's so much easier to grip the 13! Too bad I can't get the wrench to work well on the 13, but the hh2 works great. I remember someone saying something about the 12.5 work pro a while back, but I can't remember where or who... or...
Try reversing the direction you are wrapping that knut h. As in the video from climbing innovations, Richard pointed out, and I have found it to be true, that if the tails of the hitch cord are parallel to the dog bone slot, the hitch will grab and tend better. So if the spine is facing you...
My personal preference is to have my lanyard above the block sling and my climbing line below. I usually use an srt system for my climbing line, so if it does get pinched by the sling, I can still decend. Also, I make sure my climbing line is snugged up under the sling so it cannot come in...
I started climbing 4 years after this article was published with techniques and that were much more out of date. It's amazing how much innovation has occured since then!
I climb mostly srt. I switch between a bulldog bone, hh2, and wrench. Mrs would probably beat up gloves more, but depends on how you tend your hitch. I like a hand full of hitch cord and very little climbing line contact with my hand. I also wear these gloves for ground work of all kinds, but I...
