    Women Climbers

It's perfectly fine with me. This is where I introduced myself, but then I got stuck into the other forms pretty quickly. Women tend to jump in a lot less on discussions. I wasn't exactly shy or perhaps prudent in that regard, but I've generally felt quite welcomed and treated fairly according...

Really? That's not too far from us.

    About those mid-ties...

Bet we could have! We used to climb high and cut small. We probably missed many opportunities for getting things done more efficiently. Not a lot of rigging equipment in our trucks. One rope, one block and one porty. And it was probably on the other truck then we thought about it. Funny how it's...

    About those mid-ties...

That's why I was interested in the discussion. I see this done poorly so often on videos, but now I've seen it done well, and for good reasons. But you're right. If you don't manage your rigging triangle properly, you can mess up anything.

    Working In Hell

I think trees are just too ordinary here. It's the default vegetation. Virtually any of the trees I climb here routinely would be a big gigantic deal in Calgary. We'd all fight over who got to climb it. Back there people are really protective of their trees since most of them are planted. We did...

    About those mid-ties...

We usually have loads of height here. I never thought of that as an advantage before, but it really is.

    Old school v.s. New school

Exactly my thoughts. Just add a rope wrench to your hitchclimber set up and voilà. You don't need to have a foot and knee ascender, but once you've tried that on a long ascent, you'll probably love it. Just different tool configurations. If you really think about doubled rope, the only way it's...

    Working In Hell

No sh*t. With all the amazing and huge trees here, you'd think we'd get more pruning to do. But no. Huge trees of diverse species grow here all by themselves all over the place. People only want them looked at in terms of hazards. Pruning is usually hazard dead wood. I get to the point where...

    "Well, sh*t... that wasn't what I expected.

Interesting. I wondered about this. I've never been close to heat exhaustion and certainly not cramps and vomiting. I wear all the same gear I do in winter, except the jacket(s) or vest. Same boots, socks, saw pants, gloves, helmet. The heat doesn't physically bother me as much as it messes...

    Anyone conceal carry while working?

Well, not surprising in the least. Being a Canadian and still finding the idea of being strapped in public weird, I'll concede that concealed carry of a hand gun might save you if you're cornered by a shooter in a school or a club. I realize that's a fear that Americans have. The picture of...

    Working In Hell

Some cool, or should I say cooling strategies so far. I seem to tolerate the heat well enough as far as comfort goes, but I've noticed muddled thoughts from time to time near the end of a day which freaks me out a bit. I might try dumping water on my stupid brain. That sounds good. I've done...

    New Lyme desease test

I get tick bites all the time. I find them early, but when I rub them off the area will have an itchy red mark for weeks and weeks. I'm not too worried about Lyme, but Erlichiosis is very possible.

    Working In Hell

OK. That's an exaggeration, but the Southern summer is still something to be reckoned with. I've concluded after 4 years here and the previous balance of my life in the cold white north that although working in extreme cold is even more unpleasant and painful than the extreme heat; the heat is...

    Potential career ender.

Don't put too much stock in doctors predictions. They have little experience with the outcomes for people in our business.

    "Well, sh*t... that wasn't what I expected.

Scary indeed. A solid Southern summer for sure. Heat index bringing it to near 100 most days and over that some days. It's a real education learning how the heat can affect your body and judgment. Take care! Drink lots and go slow.

    Saka vs Velox?

I usually send my haas down after initial ascent. Sometimes I forget and it stays on my harness coiled up. If it doesn't get snagged, it's forgotten and no problem.

    About those mid-ties...

Definitely not a troll comment. There's been at least one good video in this thread showing it done to good and safe effect. That's what I'm looking for. Want to see more of it. I don't think it's something I'd do lots of, but it's definitely a useful technique. I like no surprises when rigging.

    TreeStuff Packages

Those are great climbing gloves if you like gloves. They don't last too long, but they are good. It's really common to get freebies in TreeStuff packages. I've received free rope bags a couple of times and usually gloves and buffs. In fact they are so well known for surprises and substantial...
