Your least favourite tree to climb, and why.

Plenty of times. Pretty common tree around here. They are a pain. i can not imagine anybody stepping on that in bare feet...

Least favourite tree to gaff - Mature sugar maple... Bark like STEEL. Did a removal last week and I have never gaffed out more times in my life than on that one day.

Maybe the gaffs are ready for a little touch up sharpening if a sugar is rejecting your step. Or the tree just really didn't want to die. I've encountered this many times when performing a removal on a perfectly good Tree. The soul of the tree tries to kill at least one of the crew multiple times through out the dismantle.
The trees although coming very close to succeeding a time or two in my career have not prevailed. Noticeably I had underbid the work each time and the tree didn't respect the number I put on its life.
Don't gate the player hate the game I tell the tree. No love lost says the tree , just shade and free oxygen . I drown in my sorrows and weep for the tree. OK carry on and watch the pavers.

I think it was something to do with the fact that the tree was on its way out, in a severe state of decline, live healthy sugar maples don't give me any trouble. But yes, my gaffs could use a touch up.

I spent yesterday in a White pine in a tight spot. by the end of the climb my hitches were pretty much useless. ugghhhh...

I feel you on that my friend. I have found that climbing Srt (no rope movement) and working the spar with a figure 8 helps decrease those problems on them nasty white pines. Just throwin it out there.

I did the entire removal SRT. The worst of the sap was while I was rigging down the wood. only the part of my line where it was choked and a few feet below got sticky but since I was bringing my choke down with me it was basically the only part of the rope I needed (whine whine whine). I should have switched to a F8. I have been meaning to put together a 'pine kit'. I volunteered to do this tree thinking, it's mid-december in VT, should't get to sticky, well it was 58 F...

If you combine the thimble saver like in drewtree pic with a knot block system srt that can help keep the rope off the tree even more yet , just takes a few seconds longer to pull down knot untie ,retrieve the saver then reset , but its worth it on a snotty sticky beast . I personally have separate lines for this sort of Tree and do quick link choker myself ,usually give the line , bulldog bone ,but if I had only one I'd would probably utilize a cambium/rope getting pitched the hell up saver for sure. You may already realize this setup ..but maybe another will find it useful.

My least favorite are saplings. Man, those things just don't support any weight!

Seriously though, I've become philosophical about it. I just look at each as representing a different set of challenges that demand specific tools and approaches. Otherwise I'd be letting the tree mindf3ck me...

fimbl saver is my go-to rope saver for sap laden beasts.
