The argument wasn't over the crane it was that after taking about 4 limbs off it the bucket we rented ran out of boom. Basically it was lions tailed up to the last 30' and he felt like I should climb the rest to rig small crane pics. I wouldn't climb it even with a chain on it was still moving in the wind. Not cool
Good call Steve also, when they are cracked like that you have to make sure you don't throw off the balance so if you take one side off the other doesn't do a banana split the other way since its counter balance has been taken away, you going to throw another chain or strap on it also? Get some pics, we are ankle deep in ice here ! Plus I'll be needing you here when you retire to run the crane so stay safe buddy! I did a Norway maple like that in November but was between 2 houses and service lines etc.... Put 4 20,000 ratchet straps on it, held the cracks, butt pucker factor was around 9! Crane guy was awesome that helped

This tree also had a full
Canopy so a little bit more
Weight was added I just did one pick from
One side then the other etc. Etc.

Levi. My thoughts are it's almost a tear out it's a huge mess in a state of balance waiting to come crashing down. Because of the unnatural and not uniform split/tear I'm afraid taking 10k off one side will lighten one angle and increase another resulting in a load shift and a complete failure. I could be totally wrong but not having a ton of experience with this I'm worried.

@Levi.CO forces from removing one side could travel back down to the remaining stem, cause oscillations, and possibly cause the remaining stem to tear out in an uncontrolled manner.

That's pretty much what I was trying to say in a nutshell! You just say it better with the more technical terms! Thanks. Better to err on the side of caution with a good work plan and fail safe backups. No ones going to scold you for putting a few more straps or chains on. But if it wasn't done and it goes south, your wearing that.

Keep your ass on the ground, look him in the eye and say no. Calm and cool like. It's his problem he showed up with the wrong machinery. What's he gonna do ? Fire you ? Fuck him if he does. You don't have to convince him of anything. Just be comfortable with your own limits. Then go home and make a nice pot of spaghetti.

I disagree with you guys about the splitting due to removing one side but do agree that it's better safe than sorry, that's a nasty tree there. No way in hell I'd be climbing above that.

I got a big apology this morning. Not important what he said but he said he was sorry he made me feel like my life had no value. He asked if I was comfortable doing the tree. I told him if you do exactly what I want you to do I will be. I set slings on the bad side off his crane and cut off it too. Second crane was the lift. They wouldn't let me ride the ball so the boss just slung me around on his crane to set slings an make cuts. Made my day real easy especially on the spar pics. 2 15k picks of trunk wood. Guess he felt bad and didn't want me to have to climb hrs today.

It was actually a 75t. The field mower is on there from a job last week and just hasn't gotten taken off yet. It should come of tonight for sharpening.

I don't think he'd trade yard access for size Deevo. He's really big on the fact he can get just about anywhere with the little Crane that could. I think he should trade up to a 33t myself.
