Notch is the cheap house brand. Think generic store brand stuff like Fruity O's compared to Froot Loops.

Stein and Camp are solid European manufacturers who have come out with solid products. I'm surprised you think Kong is superior to them as I view Kong as sort of a lame duck in the arborist world.
 
x2 on Boomslang's Kong's comment. ISC was started by Denny after he sold,or was forced out of DMM. Stein I think is just rebranded ISC gear.Camp is based in Italy, but I think all their manufacturing is done in China. Notch seems to be rebranded Rock Exotic, but I don't know if all of it is. I just don't see the advantage of companies rebranding other's gear. What's the big desire to have your own company name on someone else's stuff?

Slight derail, @Tom Dunlap have you hear from Denny lately? Was wondering how is doing and if he is still producing gear in another part of the world.
 
Hmm...mixed feelings still on this. Notch, I feel, is a product product that is trying to do a couple things:

1. Provide lifetime warranties on bags, throw bags, and other gear - nobody else does that.

2. VALUE - an entry level climber can save a few hundred on a new kit. That's money in their pocket toward their family, business, or making up for their terrible employer who doesn't take gear seriously or provide squat.

3. Innovation - Rope Logic, Knotless Rigging, Bags, Throw Balls, etc.

The notch gear bags are pretty amazing, well built with everything thought of. my guys love them. The throwball color schemes make them the best on the market. The micro pulley I was given isnt that great. I would pay the 5 bucks more for a cmi micro pulley anyday. the notch carabiner I have also probably wont see the light of day beyond an accesory. The talon seems good and well built to me. I dont like my saw on my leg though but Jeremy loves his. Looking foward to more notch products. some will be good some wont!.
 
I don't think it's china, but im gonna guess a lot of caribiners come from places that aren't the country of the company name. I can't speak for the longevity of my notch biner because it holds my yeti canister to my saddle. I'm pretty partial to my DMM ovals and the steel hitch hiker biners so it will see light duty.
 
I've been using two notch biners- one for my ddrt terminal anchor, and one for lanyard adjuster attachment to my saddle. They work, though they do tend to get more easily jammed with sawdust than some of my others.
 
The notch biner treestuff sent me said taiwan if I remember correctly. Nothing wrong with that except I can buy a made in usa rock exotica for $1.50 more. I'm interested in their throwline cube with the lifetime warranty.
 
after I posted about the notch pulley I look in my bag at my rw set up. I have my green wrench set up with the notch pulley. I distorted the plates to fit inside the pulley snug and have ample room for the eyes of my hitch cord. For my purple wrench I have the purple cmi micro pulley but swapped out with the bearing pulley of the rope runner bearing pulley. My purple wrench setup is primary over green because of the bearing. but the notch pulley makes a nice setup as well. It is a shitty little pulley but it has its place in the world. I have a green dmm carabiner to round out the color coordination. the notch biner is the wron1499614217492-1204238616.webp g shape. But I have never gotten on with the dmm ovals and so stick with CT, I hope ISC makes a proper oval because they make the best gates in my experience. The difference in all the gear is so slight its almost unnoticable and so much of it probably is superstition and other intangibles.

I think a lot of it comes down to manufacturing experience and being able to source from multiple OEMs. A lot of flavors of relationships out there. Rock Exotica did a lot of manufacturing for Petzl for a while. (Their history is a fun read.) SMC manufacturers the Trango Cinch. (SMC does a ton of aluminum machining, even their ring is machined.) The Notch Rook seems to be a good example of the "we see a need, make this" style.

Maybe the carabiners and pulleys are going somewhere - build a relationship with a Taiwanese manufacturer, do more custom work later. Maybe they're just a play on a higher-margin store brand.

Once you have a brand, you can do all sorts of things under that umbrella.
 
Oh, and for CE marked products, you can sometimes find fingerprints of contract manufacturing and rebranding in the "CE NNNN" marking on the device. That's the notified body number of the company that's monitoring compliance, and manufacturers will tend to stick with a single company or two.

If Notch tried to hide RE in the Rook, "CE 0120" would be a huge clue where it came from.

Yes the simarghu tether has really solved a lot of my issues. Before I was using a hitch climber pulley and my tether was riding on the outside and I never got along with the split legs. This tether has the tending hole built right in it. at @height makes it for Simarghu (speaking of different brands making stuff for each other). Now I can use whatever micro pulley. I was using the ISC or the CT fixie pulley but The fixe is problematic and harder to do a no drop attach and detach. The CMI pulleys are just so great because of the simple nuts and bolts design. They will last forever and can be serviced where all the other pulleys are riveted which looks cleaner but they have limited life spans. CMI hit the nail on the head and thats why a CMI pulley is such a bargain buy whereas the notch micro pulley for five dollars less is a disposable pulley so its not really a better buy. My CMI pulleys live many reincarnations.
