TCI's Effer 655 Knuckle Boom

I can presume reasons why you don't use chippers but am curious to hear it from you why you don't use chippers.

It is faster than chipping in most cases. Requires only one truck and driver to remove all debris from the job site. The prentice loader can be used for other labor saving functions. It just seems to be all around easier.

I think tier 4 emissions engines will continue to push chipper costs higher. Only having one truck for all debris and the decreased labor will make these trucks more popular in the future, but who knows? It works for us and the guys seem to prefer it...

Interestingly, we started dumping our debris at our shop last September. Our brush pile since that time was put through a horizontal grinder a few weeks ago. The pile was only about 10% smaller once chipped. I expected it to reduce more. It took 1 person less than 3 days to grind our brush for the last 6 months... I was shocked! I was told it was approximately 5K yards of chips. they are supposed to come back with a big tub grinder and grind the wood in the next month or so.

High production no chipper operations are certainly nothing new!

I copied the idea from someone else... These trucks have been around for a long time. We starting doing it in 2007... The trucks we are using are logging trucks built by a company that specializes in logging equipment. The beds are solid instead of having traditional log bunks.

I like your new vid. Can we request vids? Maybe one showing a whole work site.

[/ QUOTE ] We can do that.
I have some vid from the helmet cam being mounted to the end of the boom, but Jesse is to lazy to edit it.

Re: TCI\'s Effer 655 Knuckle Boom

Do you fill the trucks several times in a day with large removals? Or do most large trees fit on one load? Where do you store gear on the trucks, climbing, rakes, shovels, saws, etc? Back to the other questions I was asking before about chargeing more for heavy equipment. I can tell you that the large line clearance companies have a rate for each person and piece of equipment. Such as A B C rates for climbers and ground guys, then an hourly price for bucket truck, chipper, pick up, log truck, everything even the saws are figured out down to a price per hour. So maybe the way to go is figure an hourly rate per crew then when the crane is on a job add on a rate per hour for that. I guess there are many ways to figure it out, as long as you are making money at the end of the day.

Most days we fill just the truck with brush and wood. Sometimes we are close enough to the job to just run a load. Some days we bring the pup trailer if it's a bigger than average tree.

We have a bucket truck that holds all the gear. We run a three man crew and all have a truck to drive. If we had more storage on the K boom truck and the grapple truck I wouldn't even take the bucket most of the time, if at all. The bucket truck is now a traveling tool box.

Re: TCI\'s Effer 655 Knuckle Boom

Thanks for the detailed info, Eric! What will you do with the 5k yards of chips now?

Re: TCI\'s Effer 655 Knuckle Boom

The debris was given to a mulch company (brush and wood). They are responsible for the grinding and hauling.

Re: TCI\'s Effer 655 Knuckle Boom

Running a 3 man crane crew is mighty interesting. I guess the Prentice and one guy replaces 2 guys and a chipper. So I op, 1 climber, and one prentice guy, right?

If you went with the remote control run by the climber, you could do it with 2 guys/2 trucks!!

In the other thread, the bucket truck was noted as being hardly used 'cept for a rolling tool box. But where there is access, isn't it quicker/easier to use the bucket instead of a climber for the kboom work?

I gather your prentice doesn't dump cuz of the rear mount loader, what about the pup trailer, does it dump?

If you take the prentice with no pup, do you put the logs on top of the brush and just unload them separately later?

Re: TCI\'s Effer 655 Knuckle Boom

It would make for a hell of a day with just a 2 man crew. We also grind the stumps from the removals and there is a prune of some sort always thrown into the mix. So, we need a 3 man crew to keep things running the way they are. If we can get to the tree with the bucket we will use it. Since we got the K boom most trees have been out of bucket reach. The haul truck does not dump, even though the pup trailers do dump, it is quicker to just unload them with the loader.

Re: TCI\'s Effer 655 Knuckle Boom

Jesse should keep his lifeline rope bag between his knees until he's positioned in the tree, then throw it down along the optimum route for his lifeline feed to avoid unnecessary entanglement, in my opinion.

Other than that, he's doing a pretty decent job!

not for nothing and all that but you gotta get your hands the f away from the cut pieces or you are going to lose some fingers at the least the way you touching the piece post cut. what if any help can you provide in that scenario?

just a heads up, can't climb with a crushed hand.

nice effort on the vid though... you guys seemed to be enjoying yourself...

i ended up on one of classic's vids. the one feeding the chipper and loading logs. i like that set up.

Re: TCI\'s Effer 655 Knuckle Boom

eh, I know when things wont be smooth so in those cases you will see me lower then the cut, hands far away...often backing out too soon. I appreciate the heads up though and your probaly right...Im just screwing around. No need touch the cut peice unless its to gently guide it away from my face. Another stupid thing I have a beef with is why do I....and some of you....dust off the top of the spar after the peice is cut?!?! ha ha we are so friggen weird

Oh and for the record Old Dirty. We are NOT enjoying ourselves. Those are special effects.

That would not be good!!!
