Rope Wrench - Hitch/Rope compendium.

Are you telling me I am not running a michoacán? Say it ain't so Brocky..

That's exactly what I'm running, too... I thought it was a 4-wrap Michoacan spun around... I spin a Distel hitch around, too, using it whichever way it's working best that day...

You mean, which way it's facing changes the name? I think I was turning it around because the legs drop straight down, and it works better.

You’re tying it right, it’s just the Michoacán turned 180, just as you stated. Technically it has been changed when turned so a new name seems reasonable. Jeff, you better hurry and name that 180 Distel.

Blue moon, 28" Epicord 9.3, michocan 4/1. I'm about 160 lbs.

I've used a couple other types of knots and cordage and they were mostly fine, but this is completely different. Still gotta try it in the rain but it's so far it's wicked smooth in all directions.

Don't know why anyone would run anything but a 4 wrap Michoacán/Petrocan with the Wrench...

I am not an utra lite (185 lbs) and I have found that with a 28" 8mm cord I can run a 4 wrap if I go under 2 (4/2) and it runs like glass...almost scary fast...but still grabs when I need it to. I think the longer legs of the 28" causes just enough friction to hold. I have also added a half rotatoon to the left eye and that seems to add just a touch more if the hitch slips a bit

Those little half rotations of your eyes is the key to getting a hitch truly dialed in from day to day... If she is running a little too quick or not consistently grabbing then add a half rotation to one eye or both and your GTG...

For those of you with more experience / bigger brains than me...

If you're tying a michocan on a DMM hitch climber pulley, and if you're trying to make a compact system, do you think the stack height of the DMM pulley forces you to have longer legs on the prussik? Do you think that affects the performance of the knot? If it does, would using another pulley (such as the ISC RW pulley) improve or decrease performance? Likewise, would going through the center or top hole of the DMM pulley make a difference?

Curious what people have noticed.

The leg length on a Michoacan doesn’t affect the performance like it does on a VT. There is less friction when ascending if the hitch is turned 180 as mentioned. The first picture is the regular Mich, the bottom wrap is wedged in between the side plates as it’s pushed up. When turned, the hitch gets bumped up by the HC contacting a single spot.

I find leg length and reach required to fit on a DMM Hitchclimber pulley a factor. Hell, everything in hitch performance and SRS/SRT/WTF is a factor. If you're missing an eyelash today and grow it back tomorrow it will effect hitch performance. I weigh nothing and prefer a 5 wrap/tuck one Michoacan. I have a pretty short wrench tether so I'm minimizing vertical height of the hitch while finding the right balance keeping my 5-wrap hitch close to the pulley yet running free on ascent and grabbing/releasing just right. For achieving that the leg-length to reach the lower DMM pulley opening matters.

I've been climbing on Epi 9.3 or whatever it is lately and its good enough but... still like Samson WarpSpeed II the best, it will be my next cordage order when the Epi runs out. Probelm for most climbers is I don't think anyone out there is retailing WarpSpeed as a sewn-eye or sp;liced hitch cord. I use Double Overhand Noose Knot termination for my wrench hitch cords so it doesn't matter to me.

My problem with EpiCord is it tends to harden/firm up too much after it's well broken-in, (no comments from the peanut gallery please!) The WarpSpeed is slightly more supple and seems to keep that longer during its service life.

Some of you have seen a pic like this a million times but if you haven't you can see why using tied hitch cord terminations work so well for me, that's the Samson WarpSpeed II cordage.

PS. The diameter spec for Warpspeed II is all over the place. I see it listed as 9mm, 3/8" etc. etc. My measurement is 9.5 mm.

Today's ride:
Kevin Bingham Rope Wrench (RW)
Reversed Michoacán Hitch … (aka, Petroacán Hitch)
SS #2 Boat Snap tender*

*I first used a Boat Snap about 6-7 years ago. For 'simple' hitch tending, a Stainless-Steel Boat Snap runs as smooth as any pulley and is ~$100 cheaper!!**
— plus, when it's an integral part of the tether connection as shown, it's mid-line attachable and nothing to drop.

With the RW connected, a Michoacán Hitch can be tied while one Double-Overhand-Noose-Knot is still attached to the 'biner and then the Boat-Snap can be connected. So, there is never any "loose-gear" to drop.
