How does that relate to its placement relative to the hitch? I don't see how placing it below could cause the hitch to fail.
I tried it a few years ago, works okay, does tend the hitch. It takes long hitch legs and has to be set each time, takes a lot of arm movement to hand tend, and it would need a short, strong connector to the carabiner.

The Ohmega works very well, and incredibly, cheaper than a RW. The amount of bend in the rope is adjusted by the position of the dogbone on the attachment point. It’s a tight fit, and using a dogbone with a rubber insert doesn’t allow it to rotate on the pin.
It’s mostly stainless steel for its original purpose, a little heavy, but the stiff tether keeps it off the hitch, and it automatically engages immediately.
