ol timer climbers show them pics

A few of us got together in the Flemington NJ vicinity one year and put together a tree guy's (is that massogenistic?) contest at the same time as the Hunterdon County Fair there. We went in to the woods and logged a shit load of decent size same size sticks then went to the Hunterdon County Fairgrounds and augered a bunch of holes and stuck them in there. This was for 2 or 3 years back mid '70's.

We put half a dozen flags in a huge decurrent oak mid grounds, we brought in a bunch of shorter logs and we hung some rope throw targets. The contest included two 50 foot poles for a spiking contest just straight up and hit the bell (no down timed to limit injuries). Climbing contest included timed from leaving the ground, hitting all pre set flags and to the ground (no mandatory tie in nec going up). There WAS a NJ Arb Assoc. rep there too. There was a log carry, log splitting contest and a chainsaw race cutting 4 complete slabs. You had to set a flag to hit and notch and fell the long poles in the augered holes in the ground for time and accuracy. The overall arborist was just the climbing events, rope throw, pole felling and the chainsaw race I believe.

There was at least half a dozen states there and a lot of contestants. I won the chainsaw race, tied the pole climb time and barely finished second in the tree climb hit the flags to a guy who for the first time in my life I saw...footlocked (unsecured) to enter the bottom of the canopy (his buddy untangled his rope or I would have beat him). I invented the seperate hitch cord for that race so I was already tied in when I got to the TIP. Like I have said before...I didn't invent it for you...but I invented it for me...never saw anybody else do it before that...

Anyway we had some big times in the center show ring and I had the microphone and usually am pretty shy in that respect...you get used to it. They cancelled it after the 3rd year for insurance concerns. I had some picts but they are probably lost and forgotten. You might see me and my buddy's first place trophy in the chainsaw race in his business (Ralph's Mower Shop in Hightstown NJ) if it/he is still there. He modded the saw and I ran it.

Treevet you've got some good stories I could jam my whole day up to take the time to enjoy them. Thanks for putting them out there ! I'm lucky enough to have a old time climber in my family to hear good old stories quite often, but there's probably quite a few out there who need to hear stuff like this ! Keep it going man !

Sure...you were welcome to use their POHLON saw as a climbing saw but they weren't gonna go outta their way to do anything for you dumass climbers like...put a saddle attachment ring on the back, or color it a more sensible color other than green (non camo with uh greenery), or ...recess or put a cage outside the muff so you didn't barbque your privates with it :-(
Lmao

Probably late 1950's early 60's

PM me if you need help.
If you're taking a picture of the old photo with your phone make sure you get as close as possible so that your desired image takes up the whole screen and is in focus. Then reduce that pic size. It's possible you might need to crop it but not sure.
