lost testicle due to leg straps

That's rough. Good for you for keeping a good attitude. Is it possible that this could have been avoided by a different choice of underwear. You know, How ya rollin? boxers or briefs.

I have never been able to wear a leg strap harnesses because i feel like I get pinched immediately. the bosun seat has been the only way to go for me. I thought that maybe these new harnesses had resolved that problem. I have always wondered why the majority of climbers choose the leg loops because to me, they seem intolerably uncomfortable if you have to hang for any period of time. I can hang all day in a bosun seat. its almost like a chair.

Dang, if you can't narrow it down to an exact event in the tree then anything else might have been the cause.

Boy I've crack my nuts many times in leg saddles. A sacrifice for the freedom of movement in getting out on limbs.

All the best to you and the family!

Jerry b.,
I was in the tree for only about 15-20 minutes. It was a straight descent up about 20 ft. I hung there and cut one small diameter broken branch. Went about 4 ft high and swung over and grabbed the branch where the larger hanger was at in order to rig it down. Bucked in set the rope in the crotch above it tied it off and made the cut to get it loose and swung over to center and descended. It was straight forward. I mean I had no problems till I came down from the tree and unclipped. I had climbed two small trees earlier in the day with no problems at all.

So.... there was no sudden pain while working in the tree?

That's even more scary!

Did the doc conclude that it was from the leg strap?

Sorry Tyler, this is probably the last thing you need right now.

This all sounds like easy work to me. I mean, you weren't hot dogg'n or anything. And you didn't feel the pain until you got to the ground?

Weird and scary at the same time.

I used the boson once and found it to limit my range of motion. I like to use my feet for stabilization as much as possible. I basically do the splits quite a bit.

Maybe too much...

Could it have been that as a result of the blood flow being cut off that when you got to the ground the blood started flowing again almost like "Suspension Trauma"?

From the description it sounds like testicular torsion, where a full twist cuts of the blood supply (lots of info on google) vs. a compression-type injury which is more immediately painful.

I always wear very supportive shorts when climbing such as boxer briefs or even better, nylon/lycra compression shorts, so everything stays where it should. I like the shorts that go down to mid-thigh, helps prevent leg-loop chafing and wicks sweat away, which keeps your pants from sticking & catching on your legs. Go to a good sporting goods store, lots of new support/compression shorts to check out.

There was no torsion or twisting as described by sciuropterus. I know this due to the pictures and information from the Dr.

Thanks for the clarification, that was the first thing I thought of based on the description, I know someone who had a close call with torsion once. We appreciate your candid discussion of your injury, I think we are all going to be more careful because of this.
