Homemade Gaff Guards

Anyone have any clever ideas for homemade gaff guards?

I tried electrical tape and wine circus, but that only seems to be good for 2-3 uses.

Chunk of poly irrigation pipe, cut to about 3-4”. Make a hole about 1.5” down, slice along the length from the hole up the 1.5” side.
The hole accommodates the gaff, the slit gets worked around the shank
