Legends 2022

I guess see what @Crazy_Jimmy @KentuckySawyer @colb and anyone else you can think of has to say about it. I don't have a horse in this race until I'm about 65 then maybe. LOL
I like the idea they incorporated of a handicapped scoring system by age brackets , but I'm never a fan of someone getting in the dance just because they are a particular age . I will tell them upfront I do not want handicapped scoring for myself but that's because I'm still active on the comp scene. ,so I would prefer to be scored as 40 year old with no handicapped scoring. I'm 50 now feel like I am still improving and haven't reached my ceiling yet, but that does not happen by osmosis. I have worked really hard for a large part of the last 18 years years of competing. I've lost so many comps(most to a Guy named Miguel}, but the losing is what pushed me to get better . With the modern systems I really believe they can level the playing field somewhat or at least it has for me. I encourage any who wants to compete to put the work in and the results may not always show it but you know if your skill is improving.
Honestly I started really 2nd guessing going to legends lately, I was thinking about backing out. I'm not totally sure why but it could be for a lot of reasons , but reading this thread lately kinda made me want to stay home. Plus I don't really like traveling to begin with and covids on the rise again.

Solid view point. I can respect that. You make a solid argument and I agree with you so I'll drop it as well. I don't put the time in to train. I'm not a climber who has competed in many competitions. It doesn't bring out the best in me so I recognize that and pretty much just go to have fun. Honestly a little part of me would like to make it to the masters but I recognize I get out what I put in. I'm on the deck all day every day. Hardly ever climb anymore but I do miss it a lot.

I'm sorry this thread is making you not want to go. I hope it's not something we said thats discouraging you from coming. I always enjoy watching you climb. Now I feel bad. @Crazy_Jimmy

don't feel bad , I guess I've had a lot going on lately, I hope I figure it out and go .

Everybody has had a tough year. I know my family has had probably the hardest year in 30 in 2021 and i, like you Steve am just looking forward to seeing a bunch of friends and having a good time of it. Jimmy, i hope you do come, i have a lot of respect for you. See you both in Apopka.

I competed in @Crazy_Jimmy 's group a couple years ago. Along with being a class act, he's extremely talented. With a handicap, he'd win every time and we would all grumble about that. There's no single perfect solution, but maybe there could be two or three trophies?

As a former data scientist, I'll point out that age is a type of data called "ratio" and thus should not be categorized grossly into classes (40-50, 50-60, 60-70, etc.) when the natural state of measuring is the period of time between one's moment of birth and the present. A better metric might be some type of ratio of the competitor's age to their score, and possibly with the ages set to age-20 or age-40 to account for the lack of babies/under-40s competing. I'm just brainstorming... it's really a great discussion to have, and maybe do a trial run on previous years' data to see if it makes sense, and then maybe trial run for next year's comp. I'll run numbers if someone can get me as many data sets from previous Legends comps as possible. Developing Legends like this might lead to normalizing 40+ competition in other TCCs, which might be a worthwhile goal/gift.

The more I think about it, the more interested I am in seeing a "legend" category where the probability of the oldest contestant winning the category is equal to the probability of the youngest contestant winning the overall trophy. I think it would be good to have a mid-range trophy where the probability of the median or mean age is greatest to win. On masters Sunday, there would be 3 trees, giving more young people the opportunity to get experience with high level judging. If someone gets into the masters in more than one category, they have to choose which they will compete in ( to prevent @Crazy_Jimmy from sandbagging 2 of 3... :D ). This goes a little towards the "everyone gets a trophy" side of the continuum, but perhaps not too far?

What are the current age categories ?

Back in 2008, when Scotty Olson was coordinating, I had suggested something like:
40-44 Since this is the largest group
45-50
51-59
60-70
> 70

I was thinking they added a handicapped scoring system 2 or 3 years ago that was very similar to your suggestion.

When I won I never got a trophy but I held one up for a second. At this point it’s really about me trying to have to best climb possible if I make a masters. I can’t really control if I win at any give Comp , I just want to do my absolute best for that day.

The only reason I came to compete was to win and get my name on The Cup with industry greats like Bruce Smith, Rich Hattier, etc. I didn't miss not getting a trophy, but that tradition was VERY important to me. I'd be fine with the "one and done" idea... otherwise I'll just keep trying to come back and repeat.

I like the idea of 2-3 age brackets represented in the Masters. 40 ain't what it used to be, and every year there is a new batch of pups that will come in and crush. Thats also a lot more work, and Geezers has always been pretty dang laid back.

Went to bed last night feeling a bit off. Through the night fever spiked up to 100.8. Not looking good for the trip next week. Was messing on monday cleaning up a round bale of hay that was spread out and there seemed to be a lot of mold in the lower dry areas. I'm very sensitive to mold so i hope that is all it is.
