I agree with most of this, though competency speaks volumes. One of my friends, and competitors, does great work despite not being a CA. I respect his grind and ability to service clients so well. He does his best to do right by trees, but his business is customer service within the sphere of trees, not being an arborist.I agree they may not directly benefit from the letters after their name, but they will certainly benefit from the education to renew. IMHO, everybody who is making this their profession should be going that kind of education anyhow. Or any profession...I'd hope my mechanic, HVAC technician, dentist, ect are leaning more about their craft.
As a business owner, I'm willing to pay more for a CA because I think it worthwhile to tell clients a CA will be doing your work. I also (financially) support their efforts to become and stay Certified. Not everybody sees it that way - employers or clients and that's OK. Just sharing my thoughts.
There again, another couple of qualified competitors in the PHC realm aren't arborists, but state applicators that found a niche.
I'm interviewing a guy who isn't a ca, but has been a climber for a while, has college education, and a solid reputation. If he wants to chase certs that's cool, but if we build his portfolio and help him translate his skills and long term goals into action he'll be more capable than a cert without a purpose.
