I know you already said it was Western Red Ceder (Thuja plicata) but the scales are even (in a whorl) which made me think it was Insence Ceder (Caolcedrus decurrans). It really can be hard to i.d. without the whole tree. I love i.d. though and would love to see more of this! My digi cam is broken right now but when it is repaired I will add some i.d. quizes too!

Eric...yes that is a Loquat Tree .The secound pic is not indigenous to Cali , but we have some really old ones here in Chico . oil is extracted from them in certain parts of the world .

Idahotree, Am i wrong about the Cedar ? hmm got me thinking now..Better do some research myself ..I opologize if I'm wrong

Greg,
The oil hint may confirm my original thought of Camphor Tree. I wish I could get Loquat friut here, one of my favorite fruits.

Like I said, it is difficult to i.d. without all the clues. If I am not mistaken though, the Incense Ceder scales are in a whorled arrangement. All the scale tips are even. I could be wrong, but that was my impression from the photo.

I could use these types of challenges. I'm stymied when Greg posts his samples. I think there should be guidelines on how to post samples.

Sorry greg, I need to use a dichotomous key to answer questions. My i.d. skills need work.

I think it's a great idea! Practically everyone could use some brushing up on their tree ID skills.

I found a program that let's you make little flash cards with pictures and facts, then you can quiz yourself. I am going to put it on my PDA so when I'm at work waiting for Joe to get out of the tree, I can put that time to good use...(I guess I could help clean up!)

but, yeah...good idea.

Idahotree,

Yes thats correct on the secound one. Nice job. As for the the first one, no. not in the same genus. This tree grows large, usually hold its leaves until new bud break.sorry i dont know where it originates. The genus is one of the larger and there are many species in this catagory. That should narrow down your hunting.
I'm going to through in a full size tree here. I belive this tree grows more back East then here, although we do have some large one and this is one of them. About four foot at the base.

Thanks
Greg

Greg,
The buds on sample 1 sure look like Quercus. Which one I don't know without looking it up. My guess would be mulenbergii but I've never seen one.
