Bored backcuts/ anti-barberchair/ anti-fiber pull Thread

Yes. I always figured as much, but wanted to avoid assumptions until fully considered.

This was a green alder branch today that I knew would be okay if it split, so I just back cut it to experiment.

Sorry for the sideways pic. This limb leaned very horizontally out of the forest, into the residents' backyard

Oh yes, the farmers bore cut aka the sloping bore cut lol. I've practiced them on the ground, never really needed to use one when climbing, which is a good thing.
Nice job getting those all topped out. Was there a reason you couldn't have dropped that tree right into the field.
Curious...Why is it a good thing that you haven't needed one while climbing?

That backstrap-release is a good safety measure for gusty conditions, independent of any split risk.

Because I haven't been in a tree in a couple yrs ;). When I was doing a little climbing it was primarily to reduce canopy width or raise a couple branches to clear a target, then fall them.
I do need a good climber that I can contract some work to in the GR Michigan area, I pass up quite a bit because it doesn't work for me.

Where’s woodpecker?

He's about an 1:15 away, hasn't really worked out to have his help(if that's what you mean), I've contacted him a few times. Be nice to have someone who climbs or with a 72' lift to contract.
I actually have a few ideas like some help with real soon, I'll manage if I don't, but it takes a lot more effort.

Step cut on a smaller red oak.
Have to watch back leaners as they can chair also. This one you can clearly see I had pulled it a little much and it started to chair. It's not shown in the video, but I had already stood it up about 8' at the tips. There were multiple branches that were limb locked, the good thing was they weren't over the house, but they didn't break out anyway.

Stay in your wheel house will ya? Alders will pop open this time of year. Even after limbing and blowing a top. I’ve seen spars pop 18”, and while eating lunch the pile of bucked rounds will start self splitting.
Haven’t seen it be a problem but it’s sure uncomfortable to see the stem your on pop and open up on you.
So you think hiking a chain up that tree and tightening it with wedges was a good idea?

I appreciate the info on alder fibers, but it's just not that hard... it can't be...
