Cranes helped me understand wood weight. Sometimes you go big. Blew this pine top down end of today on Rope. Wanted to go home.

nice!
wind resistance with a big top like that makes a HUGE difference in the forces involved... if you did the math on JUST the weight of that top and the distance fallen, the numbers would get way out of control... the sweeping motion and the wind resistance make a top like that very doable... of course I'd feel a lot better taking out a top like that from the bucket... Good job!

schoolyard taunts from a martial artist . Now who's the bully ? Just remember , from one little ol weenie to a big weenie ?( just assuming),Grasshopper ... Rigging a tree is The Art of Many Limbs , not just Eight . Now I'm gonna run and tell my mommy you called me the D word ,

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

Props to you for researching my profile and Muay Thai...though I never brought it up. I think maybe you got problems at home, beat up on the ol' lady, feel bad about it later, and then take it out on anybody you deem lesser than you on the forum. Is that about it? Remember, you're not just a screen name. You may end up face to face with some of these people one day.

Ya know, you're actually pretty funny. But attacking people unprovoked kills the charm big man. It's too bad your attitude is condoned on here, even by an administrator, just because you have years of experience and apparent knowledge. People come on here to learn, or in your case to "peacock". But nobody's gonna wanna learn from you. Too much verbal abuse to sift through.

So, here's my advice: Get yourself a little baby powder. Put it on your little tushy, and see if you can get rid of that fanny rash. Maybe an oatmeal bath might help, too. And for goodness sake, get that tampon string untangled.

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

How about just research the 'victim triangle'

Then understand that 'riggs' attitude to me was parental, I only asked an 'adult' question, and got a 'child' response.

If anyone knows about transactional analysis, they'll understand this.

So I only now hope that 'riggs' can see my side.

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

Guys do you need tampons for that? Jeez Riggs is Riggs. If you cant stand the heat etc. This BS on here is why TB doesn't get too much traffic. Take it with a pinch of salt for crying out loud, you bunch of playground tittle tattles. LOL Riggs gets my vote.

Hey Riggs, you're a douche with a little weenie. Why don't you STFU?

This is when this thread turned into schoolyard behavior. Tut tut

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

Ben, you're entitled to your opinion. I'm not just going to cower in the background when I see people being bullied. Maybe I don't know Riggs. But it's pretty obvious how he comes across to some. Anyway, I don't wanna talk this to death.

So, back to rigging.

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

hears whats up? Treelogic , no research , just clicked your name . I love martial arts , boxing all that . Whole life . I base my tree work on martial arts . Flow . No research , appreciate what you do on the side . Tuttle said he thinks that we have no control . lowering a limb . I disagree , Norm says treebuzz is not reliable , I disagree . I didn't provoke anyone except Tom the tree ? in all your 591 posts , in the time you've been here , you really think in my time here Ive never helped anyone out ? read your last two post to me and see if I ever wrote anything that is off subject . where is the Logic in that? treelogic? I got the game and I walk the talk , got a problem with that , well bring it ! No screen name , no hiding , I'm Riggs , live in Bryn Mawr Pa. . Aint hiding behind no screen name . I eat oatmeal in the morning , than game on ! LIving the dream !

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

tuttle I see your side , but we do have control and the rope is not the weak link . The tree is ! your choice !

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

Well maybe we can meet up and clinch it sometime Riggs. Until then, how about cut people a break and let's get back to trees.

I think you may have misread my thoughts.

The rope is the gauge, in my book, because every other piece of kit is higher, my rope is only 2500kgs so I work off that.

That said, the tree itself is a weak link, as is the groundy with lack of control, a good groundy can make a piece rope work 3 times as hard than one that holds on tight.

I always recommend learning to fly a large delta kite in a good wind, it teaches you about paying out, rope burn and balance between wind/kite - then when you get to doing ground work the principles are same, the scale is just bigger :)

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

Weakest link...

Riggs, are you saying the tree IS the weakest link in a rigging operation?
Or that it SHOULD be the weakest link?

In my experience, the rigging system should be set up so that the rope, if something were to fail, would be the 1st to go. I know a snapped rope can hit you like a shotgun, but it'd be better than shrapnel, or a tree falling on you, or with you in it. And that's what most of the research has suggested, at least that I've read.

What's the flaw in my thinking?

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

if you knowingly are setting up your rigging system so that the rope is the weakest link , than you have to inform every body , everybody that is the plan . So maybe you want to swing a piece and at the moment of truth it breaks and drops perfect on the lz , well than that is a chance . What if it breaks before that ? I can guarantee my ropes , slings , groundperson , there are so many situations with a tree , I just take educated guesses . Most times I'm right and I trust my own judgement .I cannot guarantee the tree. If my rope is my weakest link and I set it up that way , or it has to be that way , well than maybe I should dump it or get a crane . I've broken ropes , slings , trees , and ground peoples spirits . I want none of them to be the weakest link . No way though , I set up all my rigging based on if anything goes wrong , the tree would have to fail , not a rigging limb , the tree . If a good rope breaks and you set it up that way , your doing something off the charts . outta of control . Good luck with that method , because that's all it is ,,,luck. Sorry for all the drama in this thread , I got to get back now to living the dream .

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

I appreciate your knowledge Riggs. I don't like to push the limits so much that breaking the rope is a possibilty, but shock-load can sneak up on ya, I know. Nobody knows exactly what their lines can handle anyway. Especially after years of service. But I see your point now. The tree is the biggest unknown in the whole equation. My apologies for my comment.

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

everything every one has said is the best advice
i used to have a guy or Crew leader tat loved to try me go bigger go bigger and i alway could see things different
point is if your in the tree its your a'' dont worry about going big climb high live long dont let your groundman kill you ..when you have a good roping guy you can rope a third of an rude oak in one cut,, but why

Re: how do I know \"How big I can go?\", until.....

bigger is generally faster... sometimes a lot faster.. sometimes we need to take 8'+ pieces for the log truck .. also there are times when you need to go big to create enough counter balance when you need a balanced or but-heavy cut ..
