Friction free SRT

As a rec climber with rock and other rope access skill, it was just the opposite for me. I actually came here to learn about Ddrt. It is such a foreign concept to almost every other profession. I actually found that I liked it. I do not always use it or Single line, sometimes I use both. I think like all things in life, the more skills you know the better off you are. Many times I will use Srt for assent and then throw the tail to Ddrt with. I guess maybe it could be called positioning but in my mind they are really the same thing depending...but in any case I think they are both useful to know.

30 plus years of the ARTS ...MMa is actually the de evolution of the arts..Do you really think in the GRAND scheme of fighting through the history of China etc,,,That this type of fighting is new???!!1 ha ha ha ha ha ...That is hysterical and arrogant....And obtw this is not meant as a bust of to be inflammatory...I say it in this way to make a point.... I wont give it away though....You are all WAAAAAY too smart for me to give away the answer,,,,

There is sometimes elegance in the simple...

AT times we humans think we are SOO smart and "cutting edge" What a freakin joke we are ...Almost like Global warming ...As if the Earth hasnt gone through cycles of warming and cooling L O N G before we arrived....REALLY??? we are SOO self important... ANY how im a little buzzed on some good moonshine right now soo take this all w a grain of salt!!
Im trying to provoke you all to get your BRAINS working!! Just think people ,,,,OUT SIDE of the box!!

If you got the bottle, and can change you setup once at the top, a fast ascent can be done using a Shunt, hand ascender, foot ascender and Croll.

You can just mix and match what your happy with.

I can do it with just 2 shunts and a croll, but most be scared witless trying that. :)

I actually teach my climbers how to do both and basically give them the freedom to choose what the like best. It nice to watch there natural progression and to see them make intelligent decision regarding climbing that are based more on whats easiest, safest and most efficient than on bias.

I like the fact they don't frequent Treebuzz or even know that there's kinda this SRT vs DDRT thing going on. They just see it all as climbing and don't realize the history of either.

I've always tried to keep an open mind myself and not let bias control my decision making. I cant say that I have been perfect in that approach but its a work in progress. I am open to innovation regardless if its SRT or DDRT. I just believe in having a lot of tools in the tool box and knowing when to use the right one.

It reminds me a lot of MMA (mixed Martial Arts). Early on the BJJ practitioners dominated. So everyone had to learn BJJ or at least how to defend it . Then The wrestlers who learned BJJ defense started to dominate and everyone started to try and become better wrestlers. Then the strikers who where good at stopping the take downs started to dominate and it led the sport to where it is now. Complete fighters that are not one dimensional and are in good in all faucets of the sport. I guess that's what I would like to see in tree climbing just as in MMA how guys adjust there game plan to what problems there opponent presents. Same with climbers who can look at at tree and decide what approach is best. Not a one dimensional approach but a multi faucet approach with several options and wisdom to pick the best one.

It just seems bias can cloud our mind and cause us to throw the baby out with the bath water. I see a lot of climbers in attempt to validate one system , guys have to abandon the other. It shouldn't be that way, the advantages and disadvantages of both systems should be understood and embraced and a great climbing should be proficient in the use Of SRT And DDRT systems alike.

Jimmy-

I agree that you hit the nail on the head with this one. I've seen friends get into SRT climbing and then get stuck in that "every tree must be done this way" mentality like they have something to prove about its versatility and superiority. If it is so versatile and superior it should prove itself to me fairly quickly because of their efficiency in the tree and their ability to do things that I cannot. I haven't been sold yet but perhaps I just haven't been around the right climbers.

I started my career climbing SRT on a RADS system with an ID and climbed that way for years. I thought SRT was the best way to climb back then. Now like many climbers I use what tools seem like the best choice for the job at hand.

Kevin-

I appreciate the tools that you have brought to the industry and the innovation that you are trying to do. I even bought a ZK2 in an attempt to give it another try and see about mating it with a Lockjack or modified Zig Zag. I want to want to climb SRT because I see the versatility and usefulness on certain trees but have been put off by the lowly friction hitch and devices that I feel haven't evolved enough to buy.

I love the friction hitch. Strong, light, cheap, and endlessly variable. But there is a place for mechanicals, heavy, expensive, and not personal. I can never say that SRT is best for someone cause I just can't know. All I know is what's true for me as a climber and as an instructor. I found the fate revolver to be great and that was pretty rudimentary.

How did the wrench do with the zig zag Ryan? I liked it a lot the very short amount of time on it. A short tether would be needed, with a bumper.

The wrench and sj is great combo.
looking forward to try a zz but HH looks
a fair bit better
I wish had some help with my transition device
but I am easily distracted by other things
oh well
Cheers

Tuttle, can you do a video of your shunt climbing ? I don't get it

[/ QUOTE ]

I have'nt video'd it, but i'll explain it.

first shunt is used as an hand ascender, with a foot loop, the croll is attached at the bridge with a bungee to upper shunt.

Now the other shunt is clipped onto my boot my laces, as foot ascender, I got dyneema boot laces rated at 900kgs....Although thats an odd one, its just a stepping device...a bungee can be attached there too, to pull everything into play.

so its a frog walker type thing.

I then use the shunt on its own with a tether to the bridge as drt setup.

Of course there are guide lines and horror stories, but care is used and there are loads of tricks to descending by bending the rope through a carabiner etc.

Horror stories?

Its a shunt thing, when the release cord gets trapped and causes a free running fall, some access workers have lost their lives.

There are methods to stop that happening, by having a prusik cord above the shunt, adds a little friction, but hardly noticeable.
