WTB - HYDRAULIC WINCH for BANDIT 12XP

A few years ago, I was lucky to find one on the buzz from a guy who removed it because it was getting in the way of machine loading, and he didn't use it. Getting it mounted and plumbed and functional was a whole massive issue and it still doesn't quite work like it should. Good luck! A chipper without a winch is like a pb+j without the j, in my book.

Was the chipper built with the mounting plate factory installed? If so, you should be able to buy a winch assembly from your local Bandit dealer.
Yes, the chipper has the factory mounting plate and hydraulic hookup. My Bandit dealer quoted $8k for the winch. I was wondering if there are any used winches out there? But taking note of Analog's comment, perhaps going new is the way to go?

Analog, is your chipper a bandit? Did it already have the mounting plate for the winch? Or, did you have to fab the plate and hydraulics from scratch?

If it has the factory setup, I would just buy the factory winch, or sell the chipper and buy one with a winch on it. Buying used often means buying something with issues, or something incomplete, and if you do that you may end up spending even more before you get all the parts and plumbing you need.

Sounds like solid advice, will do. Thanks!

I'm unsure if they are mostly universal or not, but we were debating selling the winch on our 19xpc...

My chipper is a 2016 Bandit 1390XP with the winch plate from factory. The takeoff winch was from a similar vintage 18" Bandit and to be clear, the used winch wasn't the problem. Before purchasing it from the Buzz, I got all of the info from the takeoff chipper and winch-serial numbers, and contacted Bandit to confirm that it would all work together. They said yes, it's the exact same Dinamic brand winch that they would spec on my chipper so it will work. GREAT, I thought, so I went for it. Good price and great transaction from a fellow Buzzer.

The problems arose from the installers at FMI Spokane. I dropped the chipper and winch off in early January, and a week or two later FMI was no longer a Bandit dealer which presented all sorts of problems. Apparently there is some drama between Bandit and FMI and they didn't like communicating with each other, really unprofessional. I ended up being the go between and actually ordering parts myself from The Modern Group in NJ. This was actually cheaper, easier and faster than dealing with the FMI/Bandit drama. FMI had one hurdle after another getting the winch plumbed and interacting with the chipper in the way it is supposed to. At one point, I had to return the computer to Bandit to have them reprogram it to recognize the winch and then Bandit lost the computer, claimed to have never received it, even though it was proven that they signed for it. If I hadn't fought that, Bandit was willing to just say "sorry" and make me buy a new computer for like $3K. I eventually got a new, programmed computer back (thank you Bandit for doing the right thing!) and FMI still struggled to get the feed assist to work and they eventually gave up, claiming they had spent too much time and money on it. By this time, it was nearly April and my patience was shot. I got the chipper back, paid $1500 over FMI's estimated cost for the install and just got back to work with it.

It all "works" now but you have to "fool" the feed assist by pushing in the yoke near the fairlead which is not ideal but it's better than having no winch. I simply haven't had the time or patience or confidence to take it in somewhere else and get it addressed.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Yea the winch itself was all there and works well, in my case, but it was missing some plumbing and small parts that were specific to my machine. All in, it probably cost me about as much as it would have had I just went to a Bandit dealer and bought new. In my case, the nearest dealer was 2.5 hours from me and then all of a sudden Bandit dropped them or they dropped Bandit, making the next closest dealer about 7 hours away.

Thanks

I will look into whether a 19xpc winch would be compatible with my 12xp or not. What is the year and serial number of your 19xpc? I would still need to purchase the hydraulic installation kit from bandit and, of course, pay freight on getting the winch here to Maine. Thanks

All that FMI shit got really weird. They left a very bad taste in my mouth when my ordered chipper finally arrived with all my add ons messed up, non existing, or simply not done. Almost like I got someone else’s machine. FMI just blamed bandit did nothing to attempt to make it right (including not charging me for the items not there). Said tough shit ‘take it or leave it, we can have them build you another at the new price)..

At the time I figured I can do the add ons myself, and maybe tweak what is wrong or just live with it. Still bummed it’s not green, can’t believe how they messed up that one.

Wow, that's quite a saga! I had an engine code issue with my 12xp that went in a similar trajectory with Bandit and a lame dealership that is several hours away, and almost a year later, I'm still not totally certain has been resolved. My scenario may not have been as extreme, but I definitely feel your pain.

The challenge that you are describing with interfacing a used/functional winch with the computer/hydraulics of a different chipper, in a non-factory-installed situation, seems concerning. Do you think that you could have avoided the mechanical issues that you are having with your winch if you had used a brand winch and installation kit? Or do you think the other factors involved are more significant? Thanks!

I chalk my experience up to bad timing, poor customer service, maybe less than competent mechanics and a post covid "IDGAF it's not my problem" world that we seem to be in. The winch I bought used is the exact winch that would have been installed on my machine, had the original buyer optioned it that way. I bought my machine used with about 1200 hrs on it. All parts used were pieces from a winch install kit, sold by Bandit. I didn't need the entire kit so I was buying odds and ends as needed.

Not sure if that answers your question...

Thanks

It's a 2025, I'll get sn
