drop a 75' tree in a 50' LZ

One point on the above post.. when you are dealing with HUGE trees, you can't count on the same principles that work reliably in smaller trees..

Why?

And why are you avoiding the numerous questions about the 'censored' box?

Re: drop a 75\' tree in a 50\' LZ

I'm just curious, we don't have HUGE trees here. Pitching a 20" - 25" diameter top from 120' tulip is about as big as I can think of. We have lots of 60" oaks but they tend to be multi-stemmed. Similar with pines.

In all cases I proceed just like any other tree, make sure the weight/influence is where I want it, face it and backcut it... maybe put in little side cuts to avoid tearing if it's prone to split. If it has a head lean I treat it like a headleaner.

I'm not getting why a 'huge' tree behaves differently and where the transition from big to huge is.

A 50' top from an 120' tree is pretty big but not off limits, I've done it on live wood in good conditions... kinda of fun actually. But a 50' top in an 80' tree seems reckless in most circumstances. Why not do two 25' sections? It's not that much additional work and you're still pitching pretty big wood.

In Daniel's case, the tree was dead as hell so it would break up when it hit. Maybe it was safer that way.

Re: drop a 75\' tree in a 50\' LZ

I say 190' is huge, when that top lays over into the hinge, it lays WAY over, putting all kinds of force on the hinge..If the Defect is in the base or roots, then the leverage is that much greater...

100'-115' tulip is plenty big, but not undoable... I've got one big dead and one big live tulip tops coming out on tape and another one scheduled soon... The live one had a lot of decay at the base, more than I thought when I made the choice to top it half way up...

I think its important to set the hinge up with a plunge cut and then go with a back release, so it hinges plenty well to get it to commit to the lay, yet breaks fairly easily after the face closes, so there isn't too much forward pull on the tree before seperation..

as far as the censored cut, I did answer that in the buzz thread on videos, I forget what I named it.. I didn't want to "set a bad example" for all the world to see on youtube.. Who knows who is watching, and what they might think is good to do after watching. I don't want to be responsible for some improperly trained person killing themselves..

I get criticized for setting a bad example, called a cowboy etc.. which is fine, everyone is entitled to their opinions, but then don't get upset when I don't show all my cards.. You can't have your cake and eat it too...

Re: drop a 75\' tree in a 50\' LZ

find better examples of your work if you want to show it off. If you have to censor it, because your doing something dangerous and you know it, keep it to yourself. that censor is in bad taste. If you feel it is not dangerous and want to discuss the merits or drawbacks of your decision, lets have an open conversation. It seems like you hiding something, which you are. I still dont know the manner in which you dropped that top. You made it home in one piece tho so good job.

Re: drop a 75\' tree in a 50\' LZ

I make it plain and simple for you all, Dan is just a bullshot hack making his low bids and forcing his way through jobs. He's full of shot always has been. Dude your stories of correct notches and ways to do things add up to a guy with a paper azzhole.

Re: drop a 75\' tree in a 50\' LZ

Just what kind of 190' trees do you have in suburban Philly?

Leverage is leverage, it doesn't increase because of a defect's location. Defects in the base are serious regardless of the tree's size, I can vouch for that from personal experience.

Further, how much lateral force the stem sees has a LOT to do with your face cut. It's not too hard to pop a top off with little stem movement at all if you leave a wide 90 degree face and keep the hinge even. (EDIT: you wouldn't want to do that with an oversize top though) Put a narrow little jump notch in it though and you'll get a pretty good wiggle. If the hinge breaks while the top is still well above the cut you get more lateral pressure than if it's at 90 degrees. It doesn't matter how big the tree is because it's all proportional.

I'm not saying it's as easy to pitch a big tree top as a little 15" pine but the physics are roughly the same and so are the basic methods.

If you keep pitching tops that are over 50% of the tree height, the odds are likely to overtake you. At this point I have to agree, it sounds reckless and unprofessional. You shouldn't post videos like that here or anywhere else whether you censor the unprofessional behavior or not. Hubris often precedes failure and I'd rather not hear about you in the awakenings forum.

Re: drop a 75\' tree in a 50\' LZ

I can see that now. He just sent me a couple of PM's. Kinda mental. He basically says I wuz mean... was I mean? I thought I kept that pretty civil. Keeps going on about 190' trees as though that meant something. Completely misses the point about dropping long tops.

I don't think he actually READS what anybody else writes.

Re: drop a 75\' tree in a 50\' LZ

Just dropped a 90' tulip into a 75' backyard drop zone yesterday... so close to the house, I was cutting in part from the porch roof... Saved countless hours and immeasurable risk to life, limb and property. This was a big wide tree, all over the house. Would have been very difficult to rig out...

I know how to fall trees and I know how to climb trees. Doing both at the same time is no big deal to me. If that is over the heads of a bunch of idiots with keyboards, then fine... Be right... I've got better things to do with my time, than argue about it...

And I've got the proof, the whole thing on video...

Re: drop a 75\' tree in a 50\' LZ

Daniel.... grow up son. Lots of people know how to do trees, not just you... and frankly your videos and your big talk alludes to the fact that you don't.

Get that tulip into a 12' x 12' drop zone and then you can brag a little. A 75' DZ is just plain HUGE!

Where is BostonBull to grill Daniel about the Obama-esque evasion tactics regarding questions about the Censored box?

And my take on this is that Daniel is supremely confident in his abilities, there might not be anybody on this planet that can convince him that he is taking unnecessary chances. Being confident is a good thing. Helps with public speaking, dating, and making money.

Confidence should be tempered with self preservation.

OK...knock off the bad mouthing...if you're driven to that go get a room or take it to PM.

Bickering and blathering drags down the whole works.

I guess this is how my Dad felt when my sister and I squabbled in the back seat!

"Should I pull over and take care of that?"
