Discipline

I'm gonna spark notes this. We have a very relaxed company. They play the family thing to death. Never saw a suspension in the two years I've been there. The rule book is ver large and there is two lines on soliciting customers or neighbors. I've been told by our company's top guy that the owner said smal stuff we can keep which I was later told is they "meant" just like chipping a little brush. I was working for a customer and her neighbor asked for a 15 minute jap map to be cut down. I was gonna say sixty my co worker who had the crew leader spot but we have similar pull at our company told me to say a hundred and the neighbor said sure. After we did it she asked for a little leaves and she gave us another 20. Then the original customer asked for her leaves and we told her we did that for her cause she paid us and she said I was gonna give you all a 60 dollar tip anyway so we said sure and raked the leaves. It all comes back to the company and they suspended us for a day and took the 40 dollars each for the side job and the 60 for the tip each back a week later. Today they re wrote their rule book after I was suspended Friday and my concern is that there was a grey area and they were clearly going after us as an example... there is a ton more and I may have not made sense at times but typing all this on my phone is a pain so if it didn't make sense just trust me I'm right

What is a company's liability/responsibility when an accident occurs at a place that wasnt the scheduled job? While company employees and equipment are used?

I dont know myself but I'm guessing it could be a great concern.

In my opinion the only gray area there is the tip. The Maple removal falls under normal operations of the tree company and as long as it is completed during work hours, with work equipment its theirs. I would be super pissed if someone working for me did that. By doing the "cash job" that client now doesn't get on my radar for future work. I want all of my clients to think of my company when they need work, now they are just going to be opportunistic and grab whoever is working around.
Sorry man

For how bad employees could take advantage of the tree company's to make easy money on the side in comparison to what we did could be a lot worse and we're getting screwed right now. If a company has to re write a policy to be more clear then that means they let a grey area go unforeseen and should not be allowed to make up a punishment for a minor infraction

Sorry man
It was the only tree on her little property in northeast Philly and she was like 70 and would never afford what our company charges

Did the two most dangerous pieces of equipment we own get used?
Chipper and chainsaw?
It only takes a second, especially on that "15 min tree".
Its the easy ones that get ya
Tell that to me while I flip a coin with another climber to take down the jap maple while the other guy is doing a stone dead white oak crane removal

Does it make a difference that we bring our own climbing saws to work and that's what we cut it down with? We have the chainsaw program where we bring our own saw and they give us 1% of the saw every two months for repairs, chains, bars and tune ups, and if it breaks on company time we pay for it

I get your stand point but for how terrible we could take advantage of the side game and how much we honestly don't with being told through the grapevine from senior employees that they aren't gonna get to nuts if it's not much too get the tip money from the original taken away and a one day suspension after myself and no one else on the crew has ever been written up seems to be way too much

Jem, you're good at what you do. Take your ball and play elsewhere if you feel you're getting screwed over consistently.

I havent seen your work but your responses re climbing and removal seems legit. Philly is a big place right? Shop your talents. This isnt the first time you've mentioned work related unhappiness. You're also young and not married so give it a whirl.

You're grasp of the King's English could use some work however...
