Compact Bulldog Bone

The BDB does flatten a rope, apparently some more than others. It doesn't seem to effect Vortex much unless you are running up and down the same small section of rope repeatedly. In my experience any flattening comes right out in the wash so it's another good reason for keeping your ropes clean.

Ok I went over my rope and found 2 spots like this both in the last 15ft or so of the line. Near them I found spots where the cover is real fat and supple so I'm guessing it's just the way it's milking out.

I'm thinking about going back to a line I climbed in my early days namely due to the fact it was one of the only good lines out at the time . The strongest name in rope SAMSON TRUE BLUE BABY. No milking low stretch high strength. 12 strand is very bdb friendly . Did some large tree prunes with All Gear Forestry Pro Yesterday and it was great . Tad bouncy with lots of rope in system off base tie ,but no more than tachyon . You ain't flattening that shit neither!

Same here with the bdb but atleast it has the ability to rotate around the rope and kinda even it out. With the hitch cord on my hitch hiker it tends to always follow the same path and flatten it more

Everything is a tradeoff. Mechanicals like the Uni that have a rounded rope channel or contact patch will not flatten the rope. But they are more complex to manufacture.
I have never noticed flattening of the rope when using the HH. A distinction should be made in mechanical flattening and the fact that a rope will often flatten or change shape when fully weighted. The former will stay flat until shaken out or washed, the latter will return to round once the weight has been removed.

My old well worn Yale XTC runs quite nicely in these third batch bones.
Hi Gordon, I should get the bone anytime this week I think, and obviously I will try it with the only rope I ever had...Petzl Grip 12.5 mm. Kind of strange because that's what's written on the box but if you read it on the rope it says 13mm. Maybe a little too fat and also considered a rescue rope or something like that. But I'm planning to purchase a new one. Now that you're trying lots of different ones and considering I cannot get the Cougar blue here in Italy and apparently not even through treestuff as it's out of stock, I would like to have an opinion from you when you're through with experimenting with the ropes on the BDB. The only place I can buy one is here: http://www.treeclimbingonline.it/ They're really fast, delivering in two days and there's no customs fees and delays. If you want to check it out you can click on 'Corde' ( Ropes). There are not too many but yes they have the tachyon 10.5 mm. Consider I'm 210 Lbs without gear. Which one to choose? Are all tachyon ropes the same besides the colour? Little worried to switch to a thinner rope...Thanks Gordon!

I am finding that only some of the 12+mm ropes work well with the Bone, Such as Vortex and Yale XTC, the other fat ropes I have tested with grip well, but the release is too stop and go. The orange Tachyon is better than the green in my estimation but both work. Also I like the KM III, the Rocket line, and Cougar, with good grip on my weight and a smooth release. The 11mm ropes are too skinny to grip on the Bone with my weight (165 lbs)

Thanks a lot surveyor!!! I appreciate it!!!

I still enjoy my HTP, and escalator for climbing with the bone. They flatten but return to its normal shape. Also, climbing on super static ropes is only enjoyable with the bone due to the nice gradual stops. It acts as elongation that 24 strands have (if that makes sense).

lol...the different experiences each of us has amazes me. I couldn't get the BDB to grab on new 11mm HTP at all.

Could you try flipping the bottom arms to be backwards? You might have to drill holes in the ends of you have a newer bone. Doing so increases the moment on the lower pivot so that the lower link generates more friction. The top link then is used to top the balance and control.

I do Tico, Vortex and the 5/8 bollard. However my centerline is only 1 inch (look back a few pages), so anything I say make only work with mine. Not sure how many are out there with a super short centerline.

Mine is set up the same way, ML. Vortex works great with the 1" link to pivot point and the 5/8" bollard but the way Gordon has the new BDBs it should work as well.
