bowline not as life support

[ QUOTE ]
It would take most reasonable people REAL effort to misunderstand what you have presented here, Richard. Thanks for showing this flaw in the knot--something I wasn't previously aware of.

Hey Chris, we need to start getting a date set for "the grove"!
There may be more that want to join us and I'm thinking I might be there close to a week. I just came back from a redwood climb last week but I still love those doug firs, I feel like a salmon returning to my home.

Straight up ! I tie a bowline , it's not coming undone . Smoke your weed , drink your drink , limp wrist all you want while tying and trying , don't blame the knot for a limp wristed tier . Everybody here who said a bowline came undone , F*d up tying it , somehow . Grow up. No way . Daniel has it on video , lets see it , shame on you oil tank tying believers . Never seen a knot come undone since I was a child except a clove hitch , an only because I didn't understand directional pull and to back it up with half hitches . Bowlines , never , ever ! That website sure is sporting a lot of "packages" wonder how big a fairy package runs?

[/ QUOTE ]
I do believe that was bigotry.

Well I use a bowline as a life line, I won't change, but I'll going to keep a keener eye on it from now on, if nothing else this thread has made lots of people more aware.

rock ropes and tree ropes are very different. In construction and purpose. Many rock specific ropes only work with a few specific knots(bowline is not usually reccomended)If a bowline comes undone on a sailing line or a tree specific rope, you tied it wrong. lets face it, the knot has been around forever. if it came untied or didnt hold it would have never made it this long.

yo Murph , the video doesn't exist , just admit . Don't get on board whan your bored . Stick to making mistakes , lying about them . Cool ?

Oh tom , you just can't get enough huh ? admit it ! Let's all get together , make coffee and start a camp fire and sing koombyya and tie bowlines that come undone . Daniels the best , he videos a bowline coming untied ( HE PROBALLY TIED IT ), put it on the big screen ( big is better ). Break out the marshmallows . What's next ? can't wait for the next bs post . Could it be , a munter hitch on an air conditioner ? Wow , that would be crazy . No hold up , a Becket on a water heater , no WAY . slow it down , a hang mans noose on .......... nah! that would hold . It's okay Tom you read , we all need a fix . Don't use a yo yo with a bad wrist , tip of the day .

I see, your one of those guys where no one can tell you anything. Thats cool. If your weight is always on the bowline, the chances of it are coming undone are slim. But if your weight is off and on, their are possibilities. Cant wait for your bs answer...

I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to say. I made a joke based on your clowns.com comment. It was actually a little olive branch, but you're too dense to see that apparently. Don't take $#!t so personally would be my advice to you. You're not that important, remember that.

It is starting to look like YOU can't get enough of ME, actually. Fricken weirdo.

I could use any knot I tie for life support , it's KNOT coming undone .

Hey Riggs, ever have your shoelaces come untied?

I find some laces are more prone to coming untied...just like ropes.

My point: Knots will loosen if there is no load on them and they are being flipped around. Yes a really tight, jammed knot is less likely to work loose, but who puts that much weight on the bowline when setting and dressing it? The average bowline, I would say, is set adequately and its use lends to a tight knot that has little chance of coming undone, but why should that make it foolish to point out the possibility of the knot coming untied?

I would think we should base our understanding of this on more than "I have never seen it happen" We should keep un open mind if we want to stay alive in this profession especially. It's like being so closed minded to not listen to your groundie's opinions and concerns as you do your work up in the tree.

You can say I am foolish for keeping in mind that knots have their faults, but it is one of the many things that keeps me safe-er - and I appreciate when someone takes the time to make a video that quickly demonstrates the need for this awareness. Yoyoman, keep the videos coming. I'm a big fan.

Thanks.

The bowline absolutely has it's place in rigging limbs.

As for life support, if it's going to be loaded, unloaded, loaded, unloaded, etc., there are much better choices.

I did an accident investigation at a former employer, of a climber using a bowline to asccend with while body thrusting. The bowline failed, the climber fell and broke his upper arm bone (humerus) very badly, where it needed a plate and screws to repair. The climber is back climbing, but was off work for 9 months.
