I just missed out on this one, which seemed like a really good deal: https://maine.craigslist.org/hvo/d/greenville-junction-2019-bandit-65xp/7665191443.html
Any difference between the 65xl and 65xp? Just an older model?
I've been looking at a used 2008 65xl for sale (1200hrs, 35hp Wisconsin) posted for $9k and looks pretty clean for the age. How's that sound price wise? I may eventually want a larger chipper, but currently I can scatter brush...
Thanks for the suggestion. It’s not something I have any experience with, but I’ll definitely look into it. Are the injections typically done spring/summer?
Thanks! That makes sense. I think I’m just extra cautious about stressing this tree, since it feels like it’s living on borrowed time given the prevalence of DED not far from here. But hopefully removing those girdling roots will give it some extra encouragement.
Probably could have excavated a bit more, but doing it mostly with the garden hose was rather time consuming, especially with the sod, and made it difficult to not damage the fine roots. I think I may be convinced to rent a compressor and AS next time I have a large tree to do.
Well my ancestors go back to the revolutionary war period here on the same land, but I only spent summers here growing up…so somewhere in between (Though one could argue that the only “true” Mainers have roots going back thousands of years)
Couldn’t help myself after all…resubmitted my $50 bid and it worked this time
Probably won’t use it much, but got a job coming up where I want to hang a good size uprooted spruce while I piece out the top and figured this will work nicely in a DWT.
Thanks! I did have some concerns that removing more sod would lead to too much fine root damage and I was actually wondering about using cardboard in this application, so I appreciate the input from more experienced folks. We have used this method frequently for sheet mulching new garden beds...
I love what Robert Macfarlane had to say as quoted in the above article:
…the "question now is how do we use that strength of feeling and turn it to the good?".
He said that the "focus shouldn't be on the offender" but on ensuring "greater protection for big, old venerable standard trees"...
Thanks for the input @evo and @L3VI
Maybe if I can get motivated to do all our old apple trees too (about 20 that are also buried in sod), I’ll suck it up and rent an airspade and compressor. Probably worth the cost for the time savings.
Did a root collar excavation on my family's 150+ year old Elm tree and found a number of smaller girdling roots and one larger (~3"), all of which I removed. Used a hose, trowel, and hands since I don't have access to an Airspade, but worked carefully around the root flare. Forgot to take a...
I’ve been very satisfied ordering supplies from riggingwarehouse.com Huge selection and the prices are a bit better than other places I’ve looked (you only get free shipping over $299, so good to order in bulk).
I'm glad the deal worked out for so many folks! It's probably just as well they cancelled my own order; I spent the money on a Bend-right ring instead, which will surely get much more use. Already have a steel CMI 3/4 block that I use mostly for redirects anyway. But that blue sure is sexy looking!
Cruiser spruce removal on the shore; pile the brush, leave the spar. Easy peasy. And some nice weather before whatever Hurricane Lee brings our way tomorrow. HO is a 90+ woman who was very pleased not to have this tree leaning towards her bedroom for another storm. Getting a sea wall put in...
Something weird happened in my case: they accepted my bid for $50, then the order was canceled, claiming some issue with my shipping address. Never had the issue with any other purchases on eBay…
