My crew tell me that sadly, it is quite common for smaller operations around here to only have one set of gear on the truck, so even if the guys on the ground knew what to do, they wouldn't have an extra set of climbing gear with which to do it.
That had to have been already defective at the time of manufacturing. Lucky it broke in your bag and not during a climb. Similar situation but with car parts is how my stepdad ended up crashing into a wall at 180mph
