It's worth noting that Crescent City is only as big as it is because it's the city that houses the workforce for Pelican Bay State Prison, a notorious super max security facility.
Also. as epic as the National/State Park is, don't miss Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
Arcata will have the best balance of accomodations, food, walkability, centrality to the parks, walkability.
I like staying Friday night at the Hotel Arcata so that you can step out the front door into the Saturday farmers market. I think it might be too early in the season, but if you are...
So, long story short, I think Arcata is probably what you're after; very central to the different redwood areas. How long will you guys be in the area? Most of the towns aren't much to walk around in, except Arcata, but if you're into staying in a few different places during your stay, it can...
I know this subject well, and will give you a full write up after I get some coffee going here. Let me start by asking how you will be travelling. Road trip, or flying and renting a car?
What kind of soil and how deep?!? A lot of us can pull that off. I mean, I can't at my house, since it's nearly solid rock only 30"-50" down anywhere that its' not near the rim of a rock bowl.
For what its worth. I have tried digging out poison oak, then pouring 2 gallons of boiled water onto the remainder of the tap root, and it still returns with a vengance. I doubt bamboo will give up any easier
I thought that you were supposed to use clear plastic and basically seal down the edges, creating a super shallow greenhouse, thereby heating the soil way beyond normally achieveable temps, but it has been a long while since I explored that concept.
100⁰ soil temp is very different than air temp. Air temps don't reach more than a few inches into the soil. Typical soil temps are in the 60's during the growth phase, and sub grade temps are waaay more stable than above
Depends on your methodology. The search showed results indicating that a modest 100⁰f soil temp would achieve the desired effect, and soil biology does extremely well in temps up to 160⁰f. Using fully boiling water is challenging, as the temp starts dropping as soon as it's taken off the heat...
I never get excited about using the bucket, but when it's the superior tool for a given job, I can't say I don't like having access to a capable aerial platform.
I figure that's part of why OSHA can't write up an owner operator who only endangers themselves. You absolutely have the right to do that, but you don't have the right to insist that an employee does it.
As for the 'telephone'/utility pole, it's all about a cost benefit analysis, and the cost...
