I climbed a white oak yesterday and with the smaller trees close to it interfering with my throw line placement, I could only hit a crouch 70' up which I couldn't get isolated for a canopy anchor. Guesstimating how much rope I'd need when advancing the PSP, I left about 10' of extra rope on the...
Exactly. We frequently order odd 15'-30' lengths for long lanyards as well so the spools are rarely going to be cut in even lengths.
I learned that from yoyoman. Here's his explanation of it...http://www.treebuzz.com/forum/threads/the-backbone-of-my-climbing-system.30067/
I'm a recreational climber and mostly climb with tie in points 75'-85' up. I find myself using a 200' rope more often than my shorter ropes. It's needed if using a basal anchor and when using a cinched canopy anchor, it provides it's own pull down leg without needing a throw line tied on to do...
FWIW, rope will almost always measure less than "specified" if measured laid out in a relaxed state. Rope is generally measured under a certain amount of tension by the suppliers/manufacturers...
Apparently I did some bouncing before whipping....http://www.treebuzz.com/forum/threads/new-england-fly-splicing-instructions.28316/#post-395009 . That's the "good side" in my photo of the splice. The other side has a bit of the core strands showing as in your first photo and a couple of lumps...
My first and only (so far) splice was fly. It looked similar to your's...one side of the crossover tight and one side not quite there. Overall, your's looks better than mine did. I had a couple of bumps you don't have from not keeping the strands completely straight and smooth in the bury. I...
Yes, if you follow the speedy stitcher directions, it will make a lock stitch.
The needles that come with the SS are a chisel point for leather and are made to cut the leather. The potential for cutting rope fibers makes them a poor choice for sewing ropes. In the very least, the SS needles...
Having slotted a couple of the links for my own use, I can tell you a few thousandths of an inch can make a big difference in the closing difficulty.
While I would probably flex it back into place with a vise, I can only recommend to others to get a new link from Gordon.
I stayed close to your recommendations widening each pass...
All lock stitching.
Pass 1 - 43 stitches with Marlow # four whipping twine which breaks at 39 lbs of pull in my testing.
Pass 2 - 48 stitches with size 415 waxed polyester thread. It's rated at 73 lbs and in my break testing, it...
White Oak.
IMO, the GT Skeeter Beeter Pro with two additional lines to support the bug net would be a nightmare to set up in the canopy. There are many hammocks with the net supported by a single ridgeline that is integral to the hammock. Head over to...
