Re: nuttallii/cobra config.
Hey everyone,
Kathy clued me in on this thread and I have been lurking!
I was the consulting arborist that helped Kathy's client make the decision...several years ago... to live with the old dogwood. We discussed their risk tolerance and I pointed out that their...
Hey all you Buzzers,
I could not come through with my daily updates due to lack of computer access and exhaustion!
Tonight, after six days of cycling, I am in a hotel room in Monterey after another long days ride. My son Carson will be flying home tomorrrow after 450+ miles! We have had a very...
Hey Buzzers,
I thought I would let you know that we are rolling and off to a good start. Rode 98+ miles (more for a few wrong turners) from Sacramento up the Cache Creek valley and up some heavy duty hills in very hot conditions. One bike computer reported 104 in the raidaint heat off the road...
The weeping looks like SOD phytopthera ramorum symptom. Hypoxalon follows right along. Bad tree work aside this looks like it will be the real management issue here.
As I understand it there is some potential for treatment with phosphite using the pentra-bark product. Injection products are...
There have been some threads along this line....in the past.
I am also sure that there are some more middle aged lurkers out there that are chuckling about this one. I never really thought too much about how long to use my ropes. If they got cut or abused or were just worn out looking... we...
Hey all you Treebuzzers!
The TREE Fund signature event is only a few weeks away. This is the 16th year that Tour des Trees has rolled out into the countryside!
On July 20th 85 riders will set out on a challenging, hilly 550+ mile ride through California. This event is no vacation. Each rider...
I just had to weigh in on this thread. Long post ahead!
With five SIA "pulling tests" completed through my office with help from Phillip VW, Andreas Detter and Erk Brudi I think that developing science for tree assessment is going to be a fantastic help in some cases.
The trees that we tested...
Wow Roger that is a beauty!
I will measure that silver maple in my yard and see how it stacks up. Mine is also short and spreading 120+ but not as fat.
I think you should submit the numbers to the Big Tree Gang. I will help you measure if we can find a time.

I swear by the Technu products.
Also over the years I have found that gentle washing of the rash areas twice a day and then apply the medicine works to heal up faster. Once healing is on the way I use Jojoba oil which speeds healing and feels good.
For me that wild hot shower poison oak rush...

Recently I did a job from a man basket off a 50 ton crane with the jib fully extended. It had been many years since I was in one. I found it difficult and frustrating. The job was conversion of a big hemlock to a snag to make a work site safer for another crane lift.
I finally had to lanyard...
I went to see Preston talk in Seattle and get a book signed. He was very engaging and clearly he is hooked on trees.
I have read a lot of his work and its all interesting and well written. If you like his style and are not familiar with the work of John McPhee I suggest you try his books...
Re: SRT\'s
For info on the slingshot set up that Scott Altenhoof uses...check out www.newtribe.com or look in their recent catalog.
Any good slingshot can be set up with a reel and line guide. The trick is the tiny shot pouches for the Berkely Fireline (fishing line).
I thought there was a...
Re: SRT\'s
As an avid climber I have been familiar with SRT systems for a long time. I have used a split tail system for most of my tree work career.
Now, as a full time consultant and occaisional rec climber I use SRT almost exclusively. I do carry a 75' system with a friction knot (french...
Re: Employee\'s sight compromised by wood chipper
I saw a rolex watch go through an old chipper...Not repairable. Thank goodness for my freind that the band broke..
Also on a winters day in NY a cat being chased by a dog made a flash move, trying to use the chipper chute...which was icy...it...
Lets bet on the results from a test.
I'd bet that the rope is close to its rated strength as long as no critter has nibbled it.
I have a friend...Tom has been there...who has left ropes hanging for years and year round...no tourists have hit the deck.... yet. He does inspect the ropes.
I...
On Sunday I had one of the epic skiing days I have ever experienced at Crystal Mt. It had snowed over 5' in the last six days and snowed all day Sunday. Cold powder and deep...sick deep.
I had a spill in the back country at the end of the day, lost both skis and getting 15' up hill to retrieve...
As many of you may know we had a very strong windstorm on Thursday night/Friday morning. A torrential rain on Thursday evening set us up for a terrible event for tree failure.
We have seen every type of failure including big trees with good roots. Incredible amount of damage.
Everyone is...
Hey all you crane freaks.
A huge stationary tower crane collapsed without warning in downtown Bellevue yesterday evening. Horrendous damage.
Operator rode the control booth down ~200' and survived!
