Climb to an eagles nest

That would be the one, Chuck.
I guess last season while some people were watching the cams at the Great Blue Heron colony, a pair of eagles decided to come on in and destroy a nest and kill a couple of heron chicks. To bad they don't record any of the footage.

The Kent eagle cams are next one the list. The third camera is not working and needs some work, so we are waiting for a cold snap so the eagle leave. I guess this pair likes to hang around, sometimes all winter. The fishing must be good.

Climbing for wildlife applications is really a treat from general tree work. I collected Great Blue Heron eggs for a Purdue University research project the past two springs and wish I could find a lot more work like that. Climbing in remote places near rivers and woods was a nice change from the concrete jungle.

Hey Tom,

That nest looked familiar.

I inspected it for the property owner and Eagle management planning. Four Seasons crew actually pruned that tree fromn the tips in and removed several large branches...uhg...tre was already badly over pruned. Cool nest....were you tempted to get into it?...I was.

This year I have now been in five eagle trees three with nests. Really interesting.

I have also done a bunch of heron egg stealing...back in the early 70's I went to all of the Western Washington rookleries and stole eggs...all climbing on spurs and there were some tough situations...especially with angry herons dive bombing me!

I will post a couple of pics.

Scott

Another pic...wonder whats under that nest?

We learned that eagle nests on cliffs have been shown to have been occupied for up to 400 years!

That's great Scott!!
While I was up there, I was wondering how many other climbers sat in the same spot looking at that nest. I knew there had to be a few by the amount of pruning that had been done. It looks like you took the same picture, only the nest looks fresher. The neighbors said the eagles moved in about 12 years ago.
When did you climb it?
Tom
