A new path for Chestnut restoration?

I misread/misunderstood the first time I read that article. Yes, the Darling 54 seedlings are from the SUNY-ESF line that was modified with OxO (oxalate oxidase) from wheat. Apparently, this licensing to a private entity is, in part, why ACF withdrew support from the Darling lines of research...

A new path for Chestnut restoration?

Executive summary "speed breeding" to get flowers in 1 year. Rapidly identify positive traits and back at it. Pure American Chestnut. Not crossbred with Chinese. Not GMO. (edited...I missed that their starting with a GMO line) Interesting possibilities...

    Wildfires

The video posted by @Teubor said a massive lightning event on July 6. Also said smoke can actually inhibit rain. I thought that interesting. I would have guessed (wrongly!) that the smoke particles give something for the moisture to grab and fall from the sky.

I don't know as much about Canadian forestry either...but I suspect their situation isn't drastically different than ours...decades of underbrush built up, no removals, suppressing small fires that would burn that in smaller portions so that when (not if) it burns, it gonna be big. Not that...

    Wind in MD

Sounds like a bad microburst just hit the Baltimore area last night...I'm guessing if we have anyone there they are too busy to be here. But stay safe out there if so!

    Bucket Truck Boom Failure

Ignoring, for a moment, the 2 person aspect of this do people not throw pieces down while working in a bucket/lift? I have only used one a handful of times, but I'll throw little branches. Is that a no-no? (obviously bigger branches that add significant weight are a bad plan...or even medium...

    Wildfires

It was very foggy all day and a weak, but constant smoke smell. Saw a few deer out in the middle of the day...I wondered if this has thrown them off? Not unusual to see deer...just in neighborhoods the middle of the day. I was going to do a shortened day anyhow because yesterday was pretty...

    Bucket Truck Boom Failure

I wondered that same thing about the cable choked around the tree with 0:25 left. Also, hoping that isn't a "trim" job! The article said they were about done "trimming down" the tree. I'm guessing (hoping!) for a removal - meaning they were almost done in the bucket and ready to fell the...

Yes, it would twist the rope...just like rappelling with a figure 8 twists the rope.

Competency should speak far more volumes than letters after a name, certifications, recognitions, qualifications, etc, etc. etc.. Unfortunately, not everybody can measure competency well. Many clients don't even know what that looks like. And this isn't just tree care...it is across the...

I largely agree with what you are saying, so don't take two posts disagreeing with you the wrong way. Just offering a different perspective. So, with that, here I go again ;) Did legal council tell you that you assume more risk? "ignorance" is never an out. If you are operating outside of...

I agree they may not directly benefit from the letters after their name, but they will certainly benefit from the education to renew. IMHO, everybody who is making this their profession should be going that kind of education anyhow. Or any profession...I'd hope my mechanic, HVAC technician...

It is 100%...and its not that hard or that much money to be a Certified Arborist and if you are already learning the CEUs are easy to come by. It just seems like a no-brainer for somebody making this their career. But I get some are jaded by ISA so there is that.

Life in the slow lane - screech owl nest box install

I like playing with designs/making ity own and building stuff. But I'm also cheap...$17 for an Owl house on Amazon, so I'll add a second a few hundred feet from the first I put up this spring. While shopping I also found a small bat house. It was a big debate, but I eventually settled on the...

    Oak Wilt? Something Else?

I think those are questions that are still being researched.... The Forest service Lab in Delaware Ohio is doing some of that research. They have a greenhouse full of ash saplings that they tape eggs to and somebody gets to peel all of those trees to count and measure larvae. Last I knew, the...

    Oak Wilt? Something Else?

Trees release "volatiles" that some insects are able to detect telling them the tree is injured. That is a very generic term because insect pheromones are also volatiles...but they are released by insects. Same idea, a volatile organic compound (VOC: Like the stuff they try to limit in paint...

    Oak Wilt? Something Else?

https://auf.isa-arbor.com/content/33/2/132 Just first thing that came up... Other info/research out there about blocking the volatiles so beetles don't find the injured tree. That's the only reason I know of that painting wounds provides any health benefit. (Not just oak wilt...DED would be...
