    Wedges or Rope?

Oh no! Blaspheme against the tree Bible! But seriously, based on what I have seen of his work I don't think Beranak would would disagree with this: Nor actually do I suspect he would disagree with this: What I think he has done is provide as comprehensive a discussion of the factors and...

    Wedges or Rope?

I think the type of trees and their size would be a significant factor. Many of the trees here in the east coast are decurrent and tent to be smaller in height and girth, given that most trees of size were logged out already. So in Maryland where you come from, I suppose a rope would be the go...

"Not Welter Weights" on hitch and RW

I am a bigger climber (well above 200). I have had the stitch hitch work for me with the ring (a VT variation I believe). I have never run it with a wrench. Of the cords I have used, I like me some HRC. I am too cheap to buy eye to eye, but that is part of what I like about the stitch hitch...

What causes trees to grow upward?

The Wikipedia article on gravitropism describes a mechanism called statoliths and their affect on auxin.

    Tying climb lines together

We usually run our Masdaam with a 50 ft short line through the pulley and tie onto a drop line in the tree. In most cases I will tie a sheet bend and back it up with a half hitch on the three strand side. We are usually tying into our drop line midline and a zeplin bend is not really practical...

    Why no hitch for SRT?

    @Bart_, this thread? https://www.treebuzz.com/forum/threads/srt-base-tied-tip-forces.44158/

    Why no hitch for SRT?

@Bart_ what do you get as you coefficient of friction for rope on tree bark? Have you developed any coefficients for rope types or tree bark types? Also, do you have any coefficients for rope on rope or rope diameters? Not expecting you have worked on all the variables, but would love to know...

    Why no hitch for SRT?

Reading this thread I think something @TheTreeSpyder and @Bart_ mentioned but has not been fully drawn out is the role of force. In a simple climbing system, the force of gravity is an acceleration, and the force of friction acts as a deceleration. Since force is mass times acceleration (F=m *...

Whats a Work Comp company that will deal with a small tree service?

We have been working with the PA state pool as we have not been able to get a private insurer for workers comp with our smaller payroll. They are expensive at about $25/$100 of payroll for tree work. But they will certainly insure you.

    Fictional Favorites

In the Russian genera, I like Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky (it’s less brutal than Crime and Punishment although that’s worth reading too) and “How Much Land Does A Man Need” , a short story, by Tolstoy The latter is an interesting critique of human nature and the excess of...

Who is treating spotted lantern fly?

We worked trees at a local vineyard and you could watch the lantern flies making their way up the trees and taking off toward the vineyards. The bugs just smell the sap flow.

Who is treating spotted lantern fly?

And yes grape vines are not trees, but it is hard on the local farms.

Who is treating spotted lantern fly?

I had also heard that lantern flies for most trees are self limiting. Meaning that when sap flow decreases enough at the leaf from lantern fly feeding, they will move on to other trees before the tree dies. Two exceptions as I understand it are grape vines and ailanthus. But my source on this is...

Who is treating spotted lantern fly?

It seems to me last year was also less than the year before. I don’t know if predators are discovering a glut of available food and it will reach some balance. Or if weather cycles the bugs are not used to are taking a toll. I don’t know if we know.

Who is treating spotted lantern fly?

Not volunteering. But would like to comment. Berks County PA is ground zero for lantern flies. Those things are so prolific treating is not really what we are doing. It’s more riding the wave. Good thing is they are killing some of the ailanthus.

    One handed groundie, help?

What about a figure 8 on a saddle? It would decrease the load on the hand and increase the ability to apply more body bracing. Also, you could attatch with zip ties if you wanted the figure 8 to break away.

Carabiner accidentally opens after swing during a climb

I would like to echo what a couple of guys said here. It’s important to habituate grabbing the lines far enough above the hardware and descender when unstable, surprised, etc. that you don’t actuate any of your devices. There is a lot that can go wrong including uncontrolled decent and free...

    New climber grip question

I had more luck tying my Blake’s hitch with another line than arborplex. I for a while climbed on arboplex and a sixteen strand split tail. As a heavier guy I also had to do more wraps above the place where the tail of the Blake’s comes out. Something like 3 above and 2 below. The arborplex is a...

    Sticht Hitch

I have used the stitch hitch on the job. I tend to use my Hitch Hiker 2 as my go to system for both DdRT/MRS and SRT/SRS. I find it slightly easier to set up consistently and quickly. However, I have it as my primary adjuster on my lanyard. Once set up it is smooth and consistent and allows use...

    Does Morbarks paint just suck?

My understanding is there was a period where the Morbark manufacturing process was not properly removing the preservative oil applied to the steel stock by the manufacturer of the steel stock before painting. It caused a lot of paint failure and rust. We have a chipper of that era and have...
