Treesap, I wouldn't be concerned about these critiques of your fine work. My sense is that what you're doing is entirely protected under the doctrine of Fair Use. I'm all for a community of tree workers who innovate and make their own gear when and if they want to. A community where we all have...
I've seen a lot of this and always just it off flush. Can't think of a better method. I try to make very flush cuts to there is nothing jabbing out of the tree. Of course, future chainsaws will have problems in those trees but there's no way around it.
Sorry to hear about the neuro issues. I've got neurological damage (MS) but still climb, though I find myself wondering for how long. You seem to have taken things in stride and are transitioning. Hang in!
Okay, so a full list of PPE for tree work might look like the following. Y'all doing all of this? Am I missing something?
- brain bucket
- eye protection
- face shield
- ear protection
- dust mask (particulate filtration)
- cut-resistant gloves
- long sleeve shirt and/or cut-resistant arm...
I keep doing what I've been doing: mask up when I know I'll be talking to a customer AND keep my distance. But when people sneak up on me and wanna talk, I usually just have a neck wrap to pull up (not a proper mask) and try to keep my distance. It's tough being in someone else's space as they...
Interesting and rich resources. I've found, in my fiddling with different DIY friction devices (tied to a tree or the truck) that even the texture on the main pipe makes a difference. A bit of rust and patina has a nice slowing effect, though surely will show up on my ropes.
Interesting history, thanks for that. I got the impression that "port-a-wrap" (and various spellings thereof) had become a generic term for related devices much like Kleenex, Taser, Xerox (for copy), or Google (for search). This is in part because Buckingham, Notch, Bartlettman, and several...
In thinking about the possibility of device failure -- and I think it's possible for any single device to fail -- I'm considering backing up my Rope Runner Pro with one of these down below it. https://amzn.to/2MGolxh
Backs up simply make sense to me. Yes they're slower. But relying on a single...
Hi all -- after reading on here in various places about DIY portawraps, I thought I'd try my hand at making a few: small, medium, a hitch-mounted version, and a take on a bollard. Some of the ones I mocked up are better than others and all are a little rough, but I'm posting in the event that...
I know whatcha mean: there is nothing like standing under the tree and walking all around it. That feel you get and what your instincts tell you are pricelessly valuable.
Yeah man, that's me and I did a video of the build. I'm kind of thinking instead of ascenders it might be better to use rope grabs on a DIY version of the Rope Jack, but the dang thing works and that's what matters to me. It's cheap compared to a store bought Rope Jack and I only need to tighten...
