    Street tree selections?

Those columnar oaks get filthy! They seem to accumulate a lot of interior deadwood, and as it all breaks down and decomposes it seems to just build up at the base. I used to think they were great trees until I worked on them.

    Street tree selections?

Can’t say I know the soil type preference. Around here in the northeast they’re mostly occasional planted trees.

    Street tree selections?

American hornbeam seem to naturally thrive on full shade but not sure I agree for European being a full shade. Pretty common landscape plant as hedging or anchoring trees and almost always planted in full sun around here. They do well until they are planted alongside a road/driveway/house. Those...

    Today....

I was with a crew being shown a clearing job up in the Berkshires when we ran into this big ole sleeping black bear in a mess of vines. Needless to say the job was postponed.

    Critique my "treehabilitation"

This is great. I’d get good pics of both those trees to share with clients to help visually show what you’ve done when selling this kind of work. Thanks for keeping this updated.

    Street tree selections?

I’m not a fan of maple species as street trees. London Plane seems to always do great. Ginkgo is excellent especially if you can avoid co dominant leaders with included bark. Honey locust do well but require a bit of maintenance to avoid that mess. Hardy rubber tree is a rarity but I’ve...

Coronet Pruning and other Wildlife Habitat Incorporation

Cool to see this thread pop back up from when I was nerding out heavily on this stuff. Here’s one I did at my parents place from now 5 years ago on a Cottonwood that lost a lead due to a canker. There has since been a fair amount of epicormics around the bird house which I need to go clean up.

    Bamboo Management

Yeah I’d like to do a barrier at some point. They are far from the house but I do want to keep them from encroaching much further they are into a nice row of Rhododendron I have. Actually thinking about a paclo application

    Bamboo Management

Just bought a house and we have a hedge of bamboo. As much as I’d like to kill it I think I’ll try managing it as it is good privacy. Aside from digging up the rhizomes has anyone found an herbicide that works well but not so systemic that it will kill the whole grove? I was thinking Cheeta pro...

Interesting statement in TCIA magazine article

Those are the types of statements in arboriculture that infuriate me. Shame on TCIA and tempted to write them about it. This industry needs real accountability.

    big shot trigger

I got the notch trigger when I got mine as I struggled with the big shot when I first got it. 100% worth it IMO

Using a crane to trim hedges

I saw a company near me did a huge Tulip from a basket supported by a crane. Thought it was an interesting technique.

    Lidar use in Arboriculture.

Greehill seems like a really interesting company with some cool tech. Saw a presentation a few months ago from them.

Seeking advice, trying to preserve a huge burl

Just out of curiosity, why shouldn’t it go to a wood turner who is looking to make a profit?

    Dawn Redwoods w/ Japanese Beetles

Have you tried lawn applications to target the grub stage? Granted they could be coming from anywhere but it may help.
