Dang, you guys beat me to it! I could get used to other people doing publicity stuff for us though...
At long last, the Treeverse DVD is available FOR SALE at the Ascending the Giants website: http://ascendingthegiants.com/homepage/treeverse-dvd.html
In addition to the documentation of Brian...
Jeezus! Lost a testicle? WTF?
I prefer the leg loops to be tight, so that they don't move around at all. I find testicular comfort is greatest when I don't have to worry about the leg loop resting somewhere it shouldn't.
I don't much like the way that on the treemotion tightening the leg...
Absolutely hate working on Casuarina. The branches go on forever and the wood is so damn heavy. I especially don't like how poorly the wood hinges and how the resin gums up saw chain. Everything about that tree pisses me off! They can be really good for erosion control on the beach, but in Hong...
I think it's premature and also less important to decide who's to blame. What's a priority now is creating a consensus of how cougar saddle owners should proceed.
Time will tell whether these bridges can be considered defective (with all the legal culpability this implies), but I feel that I...
Tom, I have to respectfully disagree with your implication that this is climber error and not the result of a poor product. The way these bridges have failed (going from showing no signs of abnormal wear to spontaneous and complete core and cover failure) should worry us greatly.
If a rope...
This is nuts. I really hope the climbers involved are ok. What a nightmare.
FWIW, have we ever heard of this happening with treemotion saddles? Seems like this is a saddle which is much more widely used and has been around for longer, never heard of any funky bridge wear or failures with...
Here is my third iteration pulleysaver, just finished today. Got super thick, braided vinyl tubing at the hardware store, seems to have all the right properties. Psyched to start playing with it! The prussic for the pinto is spliced amsteel.
I made a mock up using hard PVC on the eye, but...
Great setup Matt, thanks for posting.
I'll second what he said also about the importance of having a short prussic for the pulley and setting it on a loop rather than splicing eyes onto the lobes of the pulley. Made both those mistakes with my first model and it made my like difficult.
FWIW...
The Epple transfer hook is generally used to hook a branch, though it can be swung around the branch to grab the line. I generally go for hooking a branch since I find it easier.
Chewbacca- before we got the epple hooks, we experimented with homemade models a bit. Weight is definitely...
According to Ronny, at least as of this March, there is no US retailer for the transfer hook. You can always try to get a hold of Mr. Epple directly at Baumkletterteam.de and try to negotiate purchase. Expect to spent about 75 euros plus shipping and customs. Not cheap, but then quality...
I'll throw my two cents in for the Ronnie Epple transfer hook. Me and Brian put a lot of work into trying out every possible way to traverse from one tree to another for the Treeverse project, and we learned to see our Epple hooks as being worth their weight in gold.
Very solidly built. They...
Yeah, we used some of the sterling climb line during treeverse practice. Nice stuff, very light, with a tight cover so it doesn't absorb dirt too much. I believe it's not hand-spliceable, tho.
Hey Jackson,
Part of our choice of scheduling had to do with convenience; we filmed in late March, and in late April Brian moved to Hong Kong and I went to Indonesia for the summer. Also, we wanted to do it when the trees didn't have leaves (for better filming,) and this was about the latest...
Good points all around, but I think the more important point is looking at the marl going around the stem and up to the cut piece. This is gonna mean that the tensioned rope drags down the bark as it is caught by the rope. Really really really super old school. I think this prevents some of...
I'll agree with Mike and Dave here, for years I've always used a yosemite finish when climbing on a running bowline. I do this for cinching it up on a limb or basal anchor, though I think it's more important for a basal anchor because of the reasons those guys listed. A regular bowline can...
Re: Climb of Record Pine / Height Correction
Yeah, I just saw this! I knew we were both spot on, but that's pretty astounding that two totally different measuring techniques over such a long distance can get that level of accuracy.
The traverse from the large Ponderosa to the super tall one felt like one of the craziest things I've done. My anchors were totally bomber but the exposure in the middle was SERIOUS.
Based on rope lengths, I estimate that the gap was 75-80 ft and the traverse height was 210-220 ft.
BTW...
Thanks for all the kind words guys. And yes, you have no idea how sweet that beer was when we finally got back to the ground.
Don't know when the film will be available for sale. It'll be on the film festival circuit for a while, but the folks who backed us on kickstarter will get a DVD soon.
Hi All,
Last thursday, Oregon Public Broadcasting (our local PBS) affiliate showed a segment documenting the making of the Treeverse film. It was on the season premiere of the excellent show Oregon Field Guide. The segment is really cool in that it shows the work that went in to getting some...
