Climb of Record Pine + OR Champ + 2nd Sugar Pine

[ QUOTE ]
Had some visitors from Norway drop in for a couple of days. So I took them to Montgomery Woods for a little walk through the trees.

Montgomery Giant. I measured the tree in 1981. Was 360 then. 30 years ago. I wonder how much it has grown.

Hey ... I met a couple from Norway too, in Jed Smith. Just in passing though.

Also folks from Belgium, China, France, Germany and Canada. Oh, and Andrew Joslin who did illustration for The Wild Trees, came with his wife.

Really like that top photo showing the grove, with the dark trunks. I can almost feel it, looking at it.

The trio from China. These folks were a blast to hang out with. Met them near Big Tree, and visited for a bit over an hour.

The traverse from the large Ponderosa to the super tall one felt like one of the craziest things I've done. My anchors were totally bomber but the exposure in the middle was SERIOUS.

Based on rope lengths, I estimate that the gap was 75-80 ft and the traverse height was 210-220 ft.

BTW, the Medford Oregon NBC affiliate will have a story about the Pine, and they're gonna include some of the helmetcam footage I shot from the traverse. The link should be up tomorrow, and I'll post it here.

Forgot to ask you, but plan to call you this month about how you set the line across from tree to tree.

In addition to the NBC KOBI 5 News that's supposed to run later tonight, Paul Fattig had the written story (x 2) online this morning with the Mail Tribune.

SURPRISE AMONG THE PINES

It was stunning how fine the weather was that day. Would have hung around longer had not work been scheduled the next day.

Will ... did any of you get up the Sugar Pine and get a tape drop number? Thanks for coming down (not the tree - lol)

Climb of Record Pine / Height Correction

Michael Taylor saw the news video tonight, and realized there was a communication situation realized through the video documentation.

Apparently Michael Taylor's laser numbers were within millimeters of the official tape drop if the number Will called down by radio, was actually 268.75' rather than 268.5'

QOUTE from Taylor via email ...

[ QUOTE ]
"So this means the actual height of Phalanx is 268.29'... I got. 268.3'. I was within millimeters of the correct height. This is the official height and it's nails."

Re: Climb of Record Pine / Height Correction

Yeah, I just saw this! I knew we were both spot on, but that's pretty astounding that two totally different measuring techniques over such a long distance can get that level of accuracy.

After joining Atkins & Taylor the past couple of years, it's becoming to br the expected. On Prof. Sillett's collaborators page at HSU, the caption under Atkins photo:

[ QUOTE ]
"Chris Atkins ... world-class surveyor whose ground-based measurements of tree height often agree with my direct tape measurements to within 1 cm."

[/ QUOTE ]

1 centimeter = 0.393700787 inches ... just under 4/10 of an inch.

Taylor has darn-near approached Atkins' accuracy this past year. Also a testimonial for the extreme precision of the high-end laser rangefinders they are using. All the more why the instruments come to mind for some crown spread measures.
