TreeCo, I did some research and decided that this thread deserves 5 stars and low and behold it now has 5 stars.

I encourage others to also support this rating.

Also, at the time of rating this thread I also noted that it had 2075 views, which puts it in 7th of top in General Discussion. The other threads that pipped it have been going between 2 and 4 years ... hence a job well done. Congratulations.

Headlines sell, and this is media.

True story.
Bob Morrison, who is a gifted but very low profile direct marketer. The original self-published book written by Bob was titled The Entrepreneurs’ Manual and sold only 12 copies, but he decided not to give up. He renamed the book Why SOBs Succeed and Nice Guys Fail in Business and sold 700,000 copies over a period of several years.

So whilst there seems to be a hosedown I say, well done ole chap.

Fact...TreeCo opened a can of worms and the worms squirmed!

TreeCo...our resident investigative journalist!
keep up the good work.

Shame how 'UK' got into the title, but then that is where the main perpetrators do business.

We are not all programmed that way, I hasten to add.

And I agree, it was a nice bit of investigative journalism.

Keep up the good work.

This bad attitude toward professional tree care goes hand in hand with a similar attitude toward safety procedures. Which would also paint an interesting picture for anyone with a bent on investigative journalism.

F*ck this thread and the horse it rode in on.

Is that still legal in Louisiana?.......I guess it still is.

There you go, the interesting things you find out on treebuzz.

What is that meant to mean?

How many have read the original thread? Where sound arboricultural and social arguments were put forward and discussed?

Arborist 'ethics' is an interesting subject worthy of debate, where people's views can be put forward and examined.

This thread is just a collection of self righteous hot air, insults and racial slurs.

Despite having the main protagonists of this rubbish on ignore, the thread title is still highly insulting, and I'm disgusted that Tom and Mark have seen fit to leave it up.

Probably just about everyone involved in the treecare industry worldwide, and very interesting reading it is to.

Thanks Mr Ed for your contibutions, they have been particularly enlightening. Especially the use of the F word, very insformative indeed.

Lets all have a group arborhug!

Hey Mr Ed, it is also a place to display fine wit and intellectual verbosity!

Mr Ed, your Thor's Hammer over at the Treehouse yeah?

An anagram of Thor,s Hammer is HARM EM SHORT! which is the motto, of the now famous treehacker brigades of the United Kingdom.

It means I don't wish to be tarred with the same brush as the title and the contents of TreeCo's first post, just because I reside in the UK.

Though I'm glad he bought it to my attention.

Topping is not the same as pollarding and veteran tree management.

They are seperated by considered and justified management plans.

Paying the mortgage and filling the beer jug are the only justification for typical topping. And thats no justification at all if we claim to be professional.

As for doing what the client wants, it just back fires on reputation. It takes time to build a client base that seeks your advice. Its better business long term to avoid those situations - usually by careful and polite questioning on the phone. The odd time you get caught out, its no big deal to politely walk away.

Sorry for my terse reply Paolo. I'm getting a bit oversensative

However, the points you make exactly mirror my own feelings.
I do not want to be typecast as a hacker / topper just because I'm a UK Arborist. Unfortunately, thats what this thread was descending into.

What we also witnessed was the prescription of topping by local authorities to tree workers.

There was a footpath tree shading a residents townhouse, the prescription of pruning was an all round topping rather than a reduction building side with a thin.

From memory also the British Standard on topping was not raised by one UK arbo till I raised it around page 31 into the thread ... that alone means either people dont know it or care for it.

Often when challenged on work I've done or ideas on where to prune something I will promptly refer to our standards. I do violate our standards in one specific area often and that is spiking queen palms for cleaning them. I have covered the whys about that often enough.

In the thread was also pics of a roadside topping here where I challenged the authorities and had it removed ... an active arbo pushing for change, persistence pays off. I suppose the crux of the matter was the justification about the way it was followed by the victimisation of those with a stand against the practice.

Many played dirty ... and that aint cricket.

Laz: "Topping is not the same as pollarding and veteran tree management.

Well put. Same in the UK and the USA and every other place.

That is the truth, on both sides of the pond. In the last two issues of the ISA western chapter magazine, the editor wrote 4 pages of opinion, based on the confusing concept that all heading cuts are topping cuts. A quick look at ANSI shows that all topping cuts are to predetermined locations while all heading cuts are selected according to defined structural objectives, and the tree's ability to tolerate those cuts. When asked, folks tend to paraphrase the standards instead of quoting them. that's where confusion starts, and too often stays. :(

In the last Arborist News p 60 was a picture of a reduction cut (which the idiot author misnamed a heading cut

). This drew a letter to the editor protesting "topping".

, so there will be a reply in the Feb issue. Plant Amnesty may also be weighing in. A popular topic, full of drama and passion.

Hey Laz2, are you the only person out of the 60 million in the UK pruning trees properly?

You must be inundated with work!

Why dont you hire Mr Ed(Thor's Hammer)...........

You'd make a great team....the saviours of the urban UK tree stock.

Good luck with it.

Hope its not raining too heavy!
