Worker pulled into wood chipper

Re: Worker pulled into wood

Yes your honor, suicide by chipper is quite common these days in every state?

Re: Worker pulled into wood

TWo men go through a chipper from the same co. in a small time period and you still blame the manufacturer!? That says it all!

The co. is definitely to blame here, and maybe the operator we dont know if he was breaking the rules or not? If he wasnt aware of the rules he obviously wasnt breaking them!

Re: Worker pulled into wood

How many reputable companies do you think there are with two man whole tree chipper policies BB?

I'll agree that companies without them are foolish and should be held partially liable if a fatality occurs.

But the manufacturers need to start putting big highly visible warning stickers in english and spanish forbiding one man operation in letter form and symbol form if they want to be held blameless for single man operation deaths using their chippers.

Suggesting it in the instruction manual obviously aint workin out too well.

Re: Worker pulled into wood

Put stickers, flashing lights, horns, hell put a midget up there who will play a wazoo everytime the operatior messes up. Its not going to change anything!

Training and a culture of safety are the only ways to change bad habits.

You think a guy is going to one day be pushing something in with his foot, like he has done for his entire career, look over at a sticker and go "Holy shite! This machine can KILL me!"

We should also put a skull and crossbones sticker on the front of cigarette packs to let those idiots know that they can die from those too!

Re: Worker pulled into wood

Do you believe in signage to warn there's a blind pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection ahead BB?

How about those symbol warnings depicting an operator wrapped around a pto driveshaft?

Does your fancy new crane have symbol warning stickers on it at any danger areas?

What's the difference between the high tech safety systems complete with sensors on your cranes, and the low tech signage safety systems on your whole tree chippers?

The crane has high tech electronic redundancy safeguards built into it to reduce accidents/mistakes being made by the operator, do your whole tree chippers have anything like that BB?

Why in one and not the other when operator mistakes can be fatal on both pieces of tree industry equipment?

Re: Worker pulled into wood

The reason there isn't a failsafe in whole tree chippers, YET, is because there hasn't been one that is PROVEN to be reliable. can you show us all one that has been field tested and proven!?

do you think stickers should take the place of proper training?

Theres no more room on the side of my 1800XL for more stickers.

Do these stickers not explain everything pretty well? we need MORE!?

Damn if you don't take being anal to a new level!

Jomoco,

I have to thank you! I mean that sinccerely! All this bickering this weekend got em thinking, do chippers have enough real world warniongs on them? is this guy possibly right that the warning are frequent enough or serious enough that an amateur would miss them or blow them off? I went in today and had a look at my 1800XL with winch that I run on a daily basis.

WHY DO WE NEED MORE STICKERS!!!!????

Here is the warning when you start the machine @ the key

And I in turn thank you BB for illustrating something through your pics of the stickers of a relatively modern whole tree chipper, it proves an interesting and very telling contradiction between NIOSH/FACE and vermeer.

In all the pics of the units stickers, not one of them warn against or prohibit single operator's feeding the unit.

So let's continue on in this pic confirmed honesty and open the instruction manual and take pics of the pertinent section dealing with lone operation of that unit BB.

I too agree that learning the truth about these matters is a laudable goal worthy of further investigation.

Good work BB, let's look a little deeper.

If NIOSH/FACE recommend two man operation #3 on their list of effective fatality prevention rules, then why doesn't the instruction manual even mention it, much less recommend it?

Honest injun now BB?
