woolly hemlock adelgid?

I use insecticidal soap on hemlocks that are less than ~20' tall or are in a hedge that prohibits me getting to the trunk for soil injection.

I realize injections are the way to go for some, depending on region. Around here, an open grown hemlock as part of the backyard landscape rarely makes it over 100-110'. It takes some cranking up of the PSI, and using "the big gun", but with some effort you can usually get oil blown up to the tops. In some areas you may have Hemlocks routinely making it to this size and larger, so I suppose equipment would be a rather limiting factor, making injections all the more reasonable.

Either way, its a problem that isnt going away. I read that cold snaps can help to kill some of it off, we had a few running days with nights in the negative teens/twenty's below zero up here, so I suppose we'll see this spring shall we not?

Oil kills every arthropod on the tree at the time of spray, yes?

The reasons I would still advocate hort oil or insecticidal soap would be that, whereas they may get the beneficials present at the time of spraying, their residual will not. These kill by suffocation and dessication, correct? Beneficials coming in after the fact will not be affected. Birds that eat these insects will not be negatively impacted and the applicator will not be put at undue risk. Much less negative environmental impact.

So IMHO, a better option than many of the chemicals devastating our environment and ourselves.

all the more reason to sell a round of foliar CT 2-4 weeks after the hort oil app.

has CT been shown to kill HWA?

I'm using safari, BB. No results yet. I just switched. Here's some data though. Yes, I know the presenter is a scientist that works for the manufacturer. It still looks very promising.

yeah. So far, all of the info I have has come from a chemical rep, who didn't seem to know much at all. I hope it isn't one of those hurry up and get it out there before anyone knows what effect it will have deals. These are great new things that chemists have found to do with tobacco now that we have figured out that it is bad for people. Hmmm....nicotene bad? Nah.
